    Hi Malcolm

If I might offer my view on some of the above points,

"but look at a code reader as a ukat member it tells you where to look not what is wrong !
So you go straight to the items to test with whatever equipment you have invested in and come to an informed decision. "

I agree with you on the testing concept but what I am saying is that in my experiance this is not being done more + more often now. The code reader IS the only diag equipment alot of garages have invested in so no further testing is done!
Almost every car I see has already had parts fitted because the fault code said it was faulty. The internet forums are rife with "I fitted parts after the garage plugged into my car and the fault is still there so the garage ripped me off/dont know what their doing" etc
Now dont get me wrong its a necessity nowadays for a general garage to use a scan tool but in order to increase your ability with it you need to invest in training.

What I'm saying I suppose is know your limits, if you overstep your ability then it will go wrong and make you look bad to the customer, best case senario you will fix the car but it will cost the customer more than it should have which leads back to poor image that we're all trying to leave behind.
If your doctor refers you to a specialist for a problem your having how do you feel about that? Would you prefer if he/she gave it a go themself or would you be happier to go to someone who has the experiance, training, equipment and ability to diagnos you properly because that is what he/she does every minute of every day?

Also when you say "but look at a code reader as a ukat member" this assume's() a standard of some sort which there is not. Each person on here will have their own reaction to a fault code description, each has their own weakness's and strong points on the ever more increasing systems fitted to cars today and by systems I mean everthing from mechanical to fully electronic.
I direct this to Peters responce also "I think its important that the site in general doesn't appear to become too elitist", we all have our comfort zone in one way or another either by choice or differant limitations and that is the beauty of the site, together there is a wealth of information on here and I wouldn't have it any other way.If we all knew it all then there would be no need for the site.

    Last but not least
"I agree things today are happening at a rate we can hardly keep up with but not everyone has the money or time to go on lots of training courses"

I could talk about this all day but my short version is this, there are two views on training
1 Cant afford to do it
2 Cant afford not to do it

I do not "have" the money to go on training course's either,no one gives me money to go training, I earn it and reinvest it as much as I can. There is alot of free training out there also if you invest the time to find it.

Anyway back to the grind, I've got some more training fee's to earn.

    Regards
    Sean
