I agree with Malcolm about the common faults and dealers having stocks of strange parts. Problem is; how can we have a quick look forum if the poster / respondent doesn't know if it's a common fault. I'm all for doing things the proper way - I used to work in a standards laboratory - but I learnt a long time ago that 10 minutes scouring various forums and fitting the 'commonly replaced' part is often worth a go. I let the customer take it on trial if I can't prove it's fixed - and be honest about what we've done. If it comes back, I've lost the price of a part - but proved it's not the common fault. I then have the joys of subscribing to various manufacturer's technical sites (they're all different!) because, somehow, Autodata never quite has the bits I actually need. Armed with about 50 sheets of print out - because the time (and Euros) are rapidly running out(!) - I can set to work with scope/meter etc. In case you hadn't noticed, the latter option costs significant amounts of time and money. We can still find that the manufacturer has offered a software fix - but that relies on having a helpful dealer contact.

I've been very grateful for some of the tips on this forum over the past couple of years and I hope I've been able to repay that debt to one or two people during that time.

When the local technical college spends a significant amount of time teaching motor vehicle technicians 'key skills' (i.e. reading and maths) we are obviously in a worsening situation but, in the meantime, most of us are just doing the best we can in a very difficult climate.

    Please don't mess with it.

    Sorry to ramble,

    Richard
