Why would Wiaa change the requirement for State ??

Why would Wiaa remove the regional tournament to qualify for state? Top 4 at districts goes onto state with very little to no changes to district requirements. I can only think it's about money drawing more cash revenue while at state. 3 days at the tacoma dome will be missourable. IT WILL BE A RUDE AWAKING FOR THOSE KIDS WHO TRAVEL TO TACOMA JUST TO BE SENT HOME ON THE 1ST DAY. Now it will cost schools so much more money to attend for 3 Days.

Please some who voted this in explain why the board decided to make a change on what has worked for decades...

This was discussed last year. Regionals is actually a very expensive set of tournaments for the state and loses the WIAA a lot of money. It's more cost-effective to have 3 days at the dome.

It's about income to the city of Tacoma, hotels, restaurants, gas, workers and so on. I think its a determent to the kids, coming from a state where we had a sectional, regional, semi-state and state tournament with a no class system. The money to city is not as measurable for the city commissioner to take notice and request it. As wrestlers stay at the school all day bring food. Whereas basketball tournaments and state tournaments teams leave can go spend money somewhere and come back...
Wrestling families are more frugal, because wrestling season can be year-round dependent on your kid's ability.
A good kid can have a bad day or be sick that allows a kid no one realized a chance to shine and wrestled lights out everything clicked. Those are the best

The real reason is this.

Every year, bar none, the Eastside of the State takes major issue that they only get to send 2-3 of their top wrestlers. They believe they have much stronger wrestling on that side, and because the seeding numbers are limited, e.g. Metro gets a 1 seed, Kingco gets a 1 seed etc etc etc, their wrestlers are forced to stay home simply because of numbers.

So finally, this gives more opportunity for kids in the strongest wrestling areas to go to State. I'm sure there will be more money made etc but this is the real reason.

Our strong district will be sending one less kid to state than we sent to regionals. It’s a bunch of junk. But Seattle schools are happy they will actually get kids to state this year. Won’t get knocked out at regionals.

4a gshl is only a 4 team district, yet 3 of those 4 teams placed in the top 10 at the dome. Now we get 2 per weight class to state. Real state kids who would qualify the right way through regionals will now be left out for tons of kids from the weak districts in king co. It is ridiculous to think this is a better way, serious backwards thinking. We will be just like oregon now. I hope these seattle kids don't get hurt when they get a top seed

Facts we whine and complain but also facts we got screwed over with new system. Also facts we dominated with less kids…now we will have even less.

It's hard when formats change. I think that the best kids will get to The Dome. With seeding 1-32 there definitely will be mismatches but the cream will rise. Half the field went home on the 1st day in years past.
Each division only spends 2 days in The Dome.

Questions:

Why would it take decades to figure this put if this is the god honest truth?

What changes are happening at the district tournaments to accommodate regionals moving to the state tournament? If someone has facts please enlighten us all.

Will the overall state tournament be easier for wreslers or extremely hard, giving now wrestlers potentially has to be there for 3 days at the dome (making wieght). Also Tacoma dome has very limited parking and that will be jacked up parking cost and sky rocket hotel rates? parking??

You only make weight 2 days like normal. Divisions wrestle Thursday/Friday OR Friday/Saturday NOT 3 days.

Thanks for being the voice of reason. It seems blatantly obvious that these guys just want to spout venom without actually reading and paying attention to the responses. It has been posted all over the WIAA, this website on numerous threads and now twice in this thread alone.
It all comes down to the almighty dollar. Anyone saying that it's because the Eastside wants to ensure their wrestlers get in are just plain wrong because the WIAA gives zero **its about how we feel. They now get to run a three day tournament and make double what they did before because there are now twice as many wrestlers in the tournament. With the girls splitting, there are actually more that twice as many so all those lower tier varsity kids who would have never sniffed regionals will be at state.

The people most pumped about the bigger brackets and more fans are the bootleg T shirt vendors. If you know, you know! Watch for the El Camino in the back lot, he will point you the right direction. Word is this year to avoid the fuzz, they will probably sell the bootleg Mat Classic Shirts out of the back of an actual Prohibition Era Speakeasy down by the docks. They used to sell them under the east end bleachers, but ByTheBook ratted them out, then the yellow coats came over and served a cease and desist. The underlying reason was some of the same guys that run the docks and lean on the longshoreman for favors or to turn a blind eye to certain freight that may come in..they also are getting a piece of official Mat Classic shirts. They control everything, from the photographers in the dome, the coffee vendors, who's corn is sold, and the shirts. Tey get a piece of everything.

Keep you posted, if I hear anything else.

Speaking of tee shirts amd merchandise being sold inside wrestling venues. WHY is the quality so shitty on most the merchandise sold at wrestling venues??? $70 FOR A HODDIE THAT ONLY LAST A FEW MONTHS BEFORE IT DELAMINATES TO NOTHING. Everything is made so cheap and they try to sell it as a quality merchandise. What happened to the quality vendors who truly care about repin the sport of wrestling like other real wrestling states do???

Can't it all be true? Increased revenue for all involved, inclusion of more kids, and strong wrestling programs gets more kids in when they were normally limited due to seed and regional restrictions.

Yup. Inclusion seems to be the buzz word these days. Include everyone, including those that are mediocre. Everyone complains of "tough" kids not making it to state, but those kids would barely make the postseason in a tough state. Our state sucks nationally and we are rewarding mediocrity. Even our girls are getting worse compared to the rest of the country. Washington girls were extremely tough 10 years ago, but that was a function of being one of the first states to sanction girls' wrestling. Now were are mediocre even in girls wrestling. Look at the number of nationally ranked girls and how we do at Fargo. Those numbers are getting worse because other states have caught up and surpassed us, exposing our weakness as a wrestling state. It will only get worse and the whole idea of inclusion rewards that.

It would be fun to disagree but if you've ever spoken with a college coach from OH, PA, WI, MN, CA...and mention Washington they respond with, "I don't know anything about Washington kids." So with the rare exceptions of the Michaelson's, and a few kids from Toppenish who disappear nearly immediately after high school, it's very few and far between in this state.

Wow, someone who actually understands. Ask yourself why their are no D1 colleges willing to entertain bringing wrestling back to Washington...just think about.

Yeah! The main reason Washington isn’t a top-tier wrestling state is because too many mediocre kids make the high school state tournament.

Hopefully when all is said and done, and the Tacoma Dome food imposed diarrhea has dissipated in late February, someone can use the new seeding criteria and mock brackets with the old Regional system to compare if the changes actually affected the outcome. I'm sure there will be a few placers that may not have under the old format, but I'd bet 99% of the champions would have been champions either way.

I think you have it right. The top 3-4 guys would most likely be the same with Regionals or without. It is the good wrestler, that may have been one spot out from qualifying for state, with a limited allotment region that gets in and that region ends up placing all four from that district. For sure there will be wrestlers there that really wouldn't have qualified in the old system but that will all be sorted out by the 3rd round. I like that all the best should get in with the new system.
