Hi Andrew
if this engine is similar to the megane 16 valve engine then your problem is probably due to the crankshaft belt sprocket not being physically locked to the crankshaft,the outer pulley locks the sprocket when the bolt is secured. ie do not turn the engine without the pulley fitted and the bolt in place and tight.
