In General, any time a standard is lowered, it doesn't help the overall game/activity. In this case, a standard has been lowered.
Qualifying events help ensure the best and most qualified athletes go to the next level. It weeds out the "One Offs" that are not consistent or worthy.
Also, it's good to minimize the complete blow outs resulting from mismatches. This also can mitigate injury risk.
Furthermore, I don't think the importance of pride in "Making it to state" should be discounted, nor do I think it's a good thing to diminish the standard for achieving that pride point.
It's not the end of the world as some might imply. WA wrestling will move forward and the Top 8 should prevail. The MAT Classic will still be the MAT Classic.
