VW Polo 1.0 1993 SPi - No spark - vehicle returns again Archived Message

Guys. Can you help me out here. this is the third time this things come back. ( no comments about scrapards please! ) Ive already thought of it.
Basically Ive posted about this before but its gone again. No spark on cranking. BUT healthy spark if I short centre pin of the dizzy 3 pin plug. Ive tried a brand new coil/amp pack as one unit still the same.
I dont understand it and I dont have much hair left as it is!
What does this mean?? I thought, in my wisdom, that if you get a spark that way then the coil/amp is ok... am I right/wrong?
If I could answer that one I may have a prayer.
I was thining it may be dizzy... but does that test have a bearing on the dizzy? I dont want to just keep changing parts.

I read this in the archives """ Posted by tony sefton on February 20, 2002, 8:20 pm , in reply to "Re: VW POLO DISTRIBUTOR"

i agree with the others "hall trigger signal fault" always comes up if engine is not running, as they say check for spark when cranking, if there is no spark unplug dizzy and check for voltage on outer 2 wires and if ok rest h.t lead near earth and touch centre pin on and off to earth. you should get a good spark if you do, replace sensor if not suspect module or coil etc. """

But I think Im geting bogged down with it...
I do have voltage at one of the wires ( 10.4) cant rememebr the other one or not ( memeory!)
I do have voltage at the coil... both terminals 12v....

Any help would really be appreciated. It could be just something really stupid Im missing.
    regards
    Mike
Ps... its a Polo L reg 1.0 eng.
and it just conked along the motorway!
