Agent Orange...VA Disability

U.S. Military Veterans of the Vietnam have been treated differently when it comes to Agent Orange Exposure.

As we know, Vietnam Era Veterans that served in Thailand (as well as those in the Philippines and Okinawa) have long been the "orphans" of the Agent Orange catastrophe. Though any Veteran that was stationed at Takhli, NKP, and many other Air Bases in Thailand can tell you that the vegetation around their perimeter quickly vanished after being sprayed, the VA and DOD have long denied that Agent Orange was used in Thailand.

In May 2010, however, the VA issued a Compensation and Pension Bulletin that addressed the process that the VA should follow in handling Agent Orange Exposure claims by military veterans on the following Royal Thai Air Force Bases, U-Tapao, Ubon, NKP (NAKHON PHANOM), Udom, Takhli, Korat or Don Muang. If you have any evidence that Agent Orange was actually used, please make it available to the VA through your DAV or other credible organization. The VA apparently does not
believe it or does not want to believe. Help your follow veterans and let the truth be known--now and forever! DO YOU HAVE
ANY EVIDENCE ABOUT AGENT ORANGE BEING USED? LET YOUR
REPRESENTATIVE KNOW ABOUT IT.

I recived A O com.for serving in tahiland. I got 60% sofar,they are still looking at a hart cond. the paper work with my award says ao was sprayed in tahiland. this was 12\31\11.

Would you be willing to share specifically what the paperwork said and the source of the paperwork? Have until 23 January to respond to the VA AMC on their SSOC of 23 Dec 2011 about a case I've been figting for for quite sometime now. Appreciate it, if you wouldn't mind....

I found additional information on Takhli Royal Air Force Base
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia--it mentions that Agent
Orange, Agent White and Agent Blue were used around
the perimeter areas of Thai Bases. It also states that USAF
used C-23 airframes started in 1966. Yet, official approval
was not granted by the Thai Government until 1969.??????
It goes further and mentions that on "base areas" were also
sprayed. In any case, thank for the prompt replies.

Anyone, I served at Takhli april 1969-may 30,1970. I was with the 41st TEWS ten after the 41st deactivation was moved to the 42nd TEWS for the balance I was a "Ramp Rat" (crew chief) on the various B-66's I' watched and read this site for a couple of years. Great site and info. I waited until 2010 to file a claim. I have skin issues and I am a Type 2 diabetic.Skin issues since discharge diabetic for past 10+ years. All private medical records long gone,except for the diabetis. I'm like everyone else trying to prove everything and document for VA. I am receiving bennies for hearing issues. All help,info welcome!As I get more use to this I will share a lot of photos of flightline and base in general.Thanks!

Hello Jim: I was at Takhli in 1969-70. I worked on the flight line as a ECM guy electronic countermeasures repairmen. My claim has been going on for at least a yer or two. They gave me decline but now I think it may go to the board of appeals.

I was at Takhli RTAFB from sept 72 to sept 73 with the F-111A's during the Linebacker campanes (Linebacker I and Linebaker II).
While I was there, everywhere you went on base had a fence or baredwire area that you would have to walk next to before you got to where you were going on base. All fences that I saw had nothing but bare dirt around it, and No vegitation close by.
The peramiter around the base was not the only place that had got sprayed.
As I recall, there were several shuttle bus stops on base that were nothing but dirt as well.
That secret compound on the south end of the base with all the Concertene Bared/Rasor wire didn't have any vegitation anywhere close to it.
And a lot of people used to walk right past that place while walking up to the flightline shops.
In case you don't remember, that was the fenced in area whre we were told that if we saw that place under attack, we were to "just keep on walking and pretend that you saw nothing and to mind your own buisness".

Also with the F-111A's flying so low to the ground all the time (i.e. Treetop Airlines), It is highly possible that they could have picked up the AO overspray while on thier missions and brought the stuff back to unnkowing GI's whether they worked the flightline or the field shops.
There was one perticular LRU that had a bad condinsation problem when we first got there and it would sometimes drainout onto us GI's in the Avionics Shop doing repairs on the LRU's.
I had the stuff drinched all over me several times before we got a TCTO directive to make a fix to the condinsation problem.
Since that time,,I have found out that two of the GI's that I gotten drinched with back then has passed away and both their families belive that they were AO problems with them.
I my self have several probles, one of which is a bad body tick that started after I got back from Takhli in 1974, and has sence then gotten worst.
The VA still doen'st reconise my problems yet.
They want more proof. Go figure ?
What more proof do they want,,,,,AO was all over the base and not just on the peramitors.

My name is Jim Vance. My father was an ECM tech at Takhli in 67-68. His name was Ken Vance. He died back in 2008 from cancer and left his wife with hardly any income. She has been battling the VA over the Agent Orange issue since he passed away. We heard that they are reviewing cases now, so if I hear anything I will let you know and if you hear anything please let me know.
We have dad's photo albums from his time there and it would be cool to hear from anyone who might have known him. Thanks.

I was stationed at Takhli Jun 68 to Jun 69 and May 70 to Sept 70. I was a jet engine mechanic and worked on the Jet Aircraft Trim Pad the entire time I was there. For those of you who remember, the Trim pad was at the end of the runway, adjacent to the defoliated area and the perimeter fence. I have APRs to document this but I am looking for anyone that can find a map of the base that shows this area (Korat RTAFB as well, I worked the trim pad there from Sep 70 to May 72, same senario, end of runway, adjacent to the defoliated area and perimeter fence.). Any help would surely be appreciated. Thanks.

I was in Tahkli from Dec 70 to Dec 71. Worked on all aircraft for radar and navigation. F105, 123, 133, b66, etc. During base closure, worked at the "dump" moving all kinds of junk and walked the perimeter during the base closure. Of course no paperwork to prove that. Tried back in 2003 for AO claim. Got denied. Now trying again. Had prostate surgery and skin problems, hearing. Looking for anything that will support AO use at Tahkli. Thanks.

I was at Takhli 69-70. Worked on the flight line as a refueling spec. I'm being told my MOS didn't put me in contact with any area that was sprayed. I'm being asked to prove I was at the base paramiter. If there are any refuelers who served at Takhlis, it would be great to here from you. I believe anyone who worked on the flight line was in direct contact with anything being sprayed.

Terry I had lots of sking problems for years. They were like tiny ulcers and they were always no specific. I also sufferd from Hypoglycemic events before I knew what thery were. I think after a zillion years it all led back to my service in Takhli.

Roger, I filed a claim at udorn as POL mos. I used maps which are on the web showing were I refueled aircraft. examples are test cell, trim pads, bulk storage,pol yard, taxiways, aprons where we refueled transit planes, which were all near the perimeter. Army manuals state there should be a 500 ft buffer zone. Also file for herbicide exposure, not A O as you will be turned down for AO. Do your homework spend hrs looking for any photos or maps on the web. Lucky I also had photos of myself refueling planes near the perimeter. Good luck

Goggle maps has some great overhead maps of thai bases. Type in the city and country . Once there, switch to the satelite view and zoom in to the runways. make copies and point out the locations you worked and the perimeter location. The web has alot of photos of thai air bases in the 60/70s

claim in for diabetes type 2,eschimic heart been under appeal for three yrs now .one other problem i'm having is anemia was not told of this problem aponde entering the service but after a car acident 30 yrs ago i was told i was anemic. VA has put me on b12 iron and it still won't come up. private dr. looking into it now. is there any thing associated with agent orange there info I can give my doctor he could look at?

I also was refueler. I remember many a night 'fog' machines being driven around the refueling area and spraying on the ground and air to maximize area covered. Too bad we can't find an aerial map of the base from 66-75 or so to see how far we were from the perimeter. They have aerial on google earth of modern base.

The Project CHECO report has a high altitude photo of Takhli in it (page 50) that was probably shot in the 60s. The flightline areas in recent Google photos looks pretty much the same as it did way back then. Especially the flightline areas. Take a look at that. In the Google photos there's a distance scale that can be used to estimate distance between things on the Project CHECO photo.

They told me another two years, because it is a DRO. ?? All together that would be Approx. 4.5 years since I submitted My Oraiginal Claim.

I was sent to guam during the Vietnam war 1970-71 .I was a duty driver aboard the AS-19u s s PROTEUS.I made three trips a day to Anderson a f b ,more if needed .I was there when the west coast dock strike hit guam,we ran out of every thing,we had a submarine along side of the ship that couldn't deploy because it had no toilet paper.one day I was ordered to muster outside the main gate of Anderson a f b and wait for instructions,the instructions came in the form of two airmen in a jeep with a yellow beacon light attached to a eight ft pole,we followed the jeep into the base and soon turned off the road and unto the large expanse of grass until we reached the boonies(jungle)we plowed through the boonies until we reached the main runway which was two miles long before we could ask anything the first plane flew over the runway pushing large crates with parachutes out the back it was very noisy several of us climbed the berm to see what was happening the first plane dropped two crates and airmen disconnected the parachutes and then the biggest forklift I've ever seen pushed the crates off the runway where we were waiting.I remember how much dirt&dust was in the air.we broke into the crates and found toilet paper,we loaded our trucks and returned to our bases when I got back to my ship I was quickly off loaded and sent back to Anderson a f b for more supplies .I was driving away when I noticed the submarine along side of the ship was leaving.I now realize that I was sent to the most heavily sprayed(herbicides)area of Anderson a f b .I was diagnosed with WALDENSTROM MACRO GLOBULAR ANEMIA AND DIABETES mellitus in 2003,I've been denied several times by different service organizations,I was put on social security disability in 2005,I feel betrayed by my gov and feel abandoned by congress that they let this happened to every service man that was sent to guam.after hearing that they could not confirm or deny for ten years I think they are coping out with that ambitious statement,I think there is reasonable doubt about agent Orange use and so does the gov of GUAM,they have petitioned the US gov to admit that they used agent Orange on guam.there are many veterans who have sworn they used agent Orange while stationed on guam mstg leroy foster even talked to the president about this problem of denial of agent Orange use on GUAM

I Need help !
I Recieved my 3rd denial for prostate cancer from thailand. They said I Had 1 year after discharge to claim, 2nd reason was, there was no AO used in Thailand.Im Furious, they still dont use my correct address, and the claim is not the one I Filed ?
What do I Do Now? The VFW in Phoenix, has not Answered there Phone in 3 days? Who do I contact?
What do I do. Im Stressed, and Very confused.
They said Takhli had no AO, but I HAve over 1 dozen cases that they have Granted just fron Takhli RTAFB Thailand. This is my 3rd so, and I still get no help. I Filed March 2011.
Please if anyone can help, My wife and I would be very grateful.

I was stationed takhli 67-67 worked in GCA as an air traffic controller. I also played with two bands in the airman/nco club and officers club, (rock band and country band.) I was and still am a lead guitar player. Many of you saw me play if you went to the club in the old Japanese quarters, How many of you flew to Vietnam and then to Thailand., If you did ,the day in Vietnam will help your case. This is what I have been told. Problem is finding flight records showing how we got to Thailand. good luck everyone.

I served at NKP Royal Thai A.F.B. from 1974 to 1975 as an A.P. Working perimeter security. In the last few years I have applied to the V.A. for disability benefits to no avail because of health problems that I know were the direct result of having served in that location during that time. Although I believe it's common knowledge that Agent Orange was stored in that and other military base locations, the V.A. will not acknowledge my and other veteran's having been exposed because like me, we have nothing on our medical records indicating (at that time period) that we were being treated for any medical condition during that time. I am now sixty-five years old and I am being treated at a wound clinic for open sores on my legs that keep coming back, lymphedema (chronic, in both legs), chronic high blood pressure, a rash that covers about fifty percent of my body that will not go away, and a skin condition on both feet that may eventually cost me most if not all of my toes. I have all but given up on getting any compensation from the government thru the V.A. but I would someday like to get some kind of acknowledgement from the government that this is something that should be addressed and handled in a way that would be at least fair to those of us who have served this country with honor.

Arthur, try using the word herbeceides, instead of A.O. the va is suppose to help us. but they don't. check with Susie for a good lawyer. they only charge if they win.also try looking up what symptoms the va has on there list, for ao good luck. frenchy

I was statoned takhli jan 67-68.i was an air traffic controller and worked in the rapcon/gca.i played in two bands in the nco and airmans club. i was the lead guitar player in the country band and lead player in the rock band. i played many nights in the two clubs. i enjoyed playing for us and still play today. good luck everyone with your claims . i am trying to get a claim settled also. best wishes ,Larry

Looking for some one that might remember me, I'am from Louisiana. The advocates and other I have talked to is implying that if i could find someone that was there at the same time as i was and could vouch for me as being on that base. Some names i remember; TECS Greer, Keller Roth taught Judo or something, Buffington, this guy and myself were changing the struts on the F- 111 There was a TCTO and all the landing gears has to be changed out. Anyway if can stir up that old gray matter it would help Thanks a lot.

Yes I have for PTSD in Feb of 1972. I was with the Bomb Dump/Line Delivery (366th TFW) coming from the end of the taxi way to bring bombs to be loaded when the F-111 came crashing down.

Greetings! I was TDY from Homestead AFB, FL in April - July, 1972. I was in Supply but helped cut down the tall grass that "tent city" was erected upon?

Anyone have any pictures of that or spraying AO around the tents to keep the vegetation down?

My AO claim for diabetes, ed & neuropathy has been denied three times. I am appealing the decision soon and I need some new evidence to help support my claim because the VA says I wasn't security personnel around the perimeter. They are telling me that if I was not security, aiding have a claim. WTF!!!

The VA found a 1cm nodule in my right lung and found some of my lymph nodes active more than normal. I see a pulmonary specialist on Friday the 25th of August for a procedure to be done called bronchial ultrasound with fine needle aspiration for a biopsy.

VA has denied my claim for AO/Herbicide exposure. If they deny it again the only recourse left is storm my congressman's

Do U remember mama-San doing our laundry and laying them over tarred 55 gal drums or in the grass that was sprayed with herbicides, pesticides and insecticides.

Anyone in Takhli summer 1972. Can anyone help. I am helping an F4 pilot family. I have heard of buddy statements that said there was agent orange residue on the planes from time to time. And across the airfield. Obviously the pilot would have touched the plane during his pre flight checks and from what I can tell the Canopies were left open continuously when planes weren't flying. Anyone willing to write a buddy letter. And in the end Ill share anything and everything we have regarding Takhli to include our appeal. Thanks for everything, and thanks for your service.

I was a Structural Specialist at Nellis AFB. I worked exclusively on the F-111. I was exposed to something and have to have an emergency tonsillectomy in 1975 after have a strong chemical taste in my mouth. 7 years later I had to have the upper apex of my right lung removed due to a pneumothorax. Just want to know if anyone has experienced anything like this? Maybe you can help point me in the right direction for supporting documents with the case I just filed with the V.A. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more information on my condition, just reply to my post. Thank you very much.

Was at Takhli in 1973 for a TDY. Worked in Traffic Management Office (TMO) as a customs inspector and householdgoods specialist. Does any remember having their personal items searched before they were allow to have their baggage shipped? Trying to prove my duties included inspecting personal baggage. Claiming I had secondary contact to herbicicdes from other airmen who were on the pertimeter. Was not on the perimeter personally but hootch was withing 350 yeards. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

My late husband was at Takhli during the mid 60's. Like so many others he was denied benefits. We got frustrated and did not appeal at that time. He passed away after 3 years with end stage Parkinson's disease, adult onset diabetes and heart disease. It is a little dry but anyone interested should read Attorney Robert Legg's website, he has won several cases for airmen based in Thailand. He has encouraged me to move forward with filing once again as a widow.

I just saw a post from Mike C regarding being an electrician on the flight line in 67 & 68. I was also an electrician on the flight line at that same time - KC-135's. I remember the Thai guards on the flight line with large umbrellas that were held up by the use of the AO 55 gallon drums. I am 73 now and was diagnosed with myasthenias gravis 2 years ago. I don't know if it is related to AO exposure.

I am trying to prove there was AO sprayed at Takhli when my father was stationed there - Feb 67 through Feb 68. He was with the combat support group as a jet mechanic.

I was stationed at Takhli Thailand 1966-67. There were 4-5 F-111's sent to our air base to be tested and used in the Vietnam War. One of the planes was downed in the first several days of testing due to technical problems with the use of bombs on the rack holding the bombs on the plane. It is possible that the remaining planes were returned to a US base after the testing and or at the end of the war.

Go to your local county or state veterans service officer and have them help you file a claim. They can request all of your records from showing when you were stationed there.

He received a letter from the VA asking for a release so they could get his medical records, and another letter asking him to send his service records!

I had the same problem.
My local VFW 3858. Helped me. They found one sentence that said Thailand.

Now I'm trying to get agent orange bennies.
I built bombs 72-73 last TEC Offensive
They say I have to have some kind of problem with my health or skin problem.

I started the process in 2010. Kept trying with the help of a VA representative until 2016. Almost ready to give up when I decided to hire my own attorney. Withion six months my claim was approved retroactively. My advice would be to have your case represented by someone you hire and pay them a "one time" fee for their services. A no brainer , as they say, from my point of view. Best decision I ever made.
