- Bob Shane (posted on Kingston Crossroads / approx 20 years ago)
Hi Max,
And a hearty Thank You for your post. Possibly the best one I've read in the past twenty years !!!
Regarding Bob Shane's above quote, it will be up to Ken Laing to find it, but
Bob definitely told "Crossroaders" there was only one Kingston Trio. (it's actually in writing)
I know "publicly" - and when giving interviews, Bob Shane would say each and every Kingston Trio
was good for its time period. (but Bob knew the truth)
All one has to do is listen to THE KINGSTON TRIO albums on Capitol Records.
Mind you, I grew to like and accept John Stewart, and was very much OK with the "semi-original" Kingston Trio.
Those Capitol albums recorded by Bob/Nick/Dave + Bob/Nick/John were absolutely glorious,
and they became very addictive. I still can't stop listening to them !!!
Max, my Mother was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease, and she turned into a person I never knew.
It was horrific, and even haunts me to this day.
Growing up, I've always had this notion, in my mind, that we've got a lifetime to do everything.
The truth is we don't.
Before you know it, we've gotten older, filled with a huge mountain of responsibilities,
and we suddenly realize - we are no longer that "kid" anymore.
Going back to The Kingston Trio and "old-fashioned" cassettes you were talking about,
I still have that Mobile Fidelity cassette of ----
"The Kingston Trio: Goin' Places"
Anyhow, Max - I hope you get around to playing all your KINGSTON TRIO albums, be it on cassettes or LPs or CDs, doesn't matter. So long as you can enjoy them in the best of health.
I plan to re-visit your "Ebay" store later today. Who knows? I might even pick out a pillow !!! (hahaha)
Max, as Julie so often reminds me, I might not know very much. But I do know this....
You are a terrific guy !!! I wish You & Jackee all the best and to keep safe.
Thanks again for your post.

Bruce…….
I just saw all of this.
I liked the one about the bullet-proof jacket.
It’s Wednesday morning here….
My brain is not fully functioning yet.
Something that seems to be happening more and more.
One day … someone will notice that I’m missing.
Someone will contact Jackee and ask, “Did Max die?”
She’ll say, “No. His brain did.”
That’s what happened to my mother.
One day she was there, and the next one, she was gone.
Another person had taken over her body.
That’s how it seemed at first.
We later figured out that it was her, only she had gone back in time to when I hadn’t been born. She may not have met my father then. We didn’t know exactly where she was. I believe she thought that I was her brother.
I can feel my brain deteriorating. If the same thing happens to me, and I think there’s a good chance it will, wouldn’t it be cool if I went back to before 1961, but after 1958? Of course, you know what that would mean.
I know of strong evidence, and there were certain things that he said that makes me certain that Bob Shane believed that there was only one Kingston Trio. It was the one with him, Dave, and Nick. All the rest were parodies. I believe that John Stewart thought this too. The only purpose that the Trio that he was in had was to make money. Nothing else. Ask Glen Campbell. The fact that this trio sang Blowing In The Wind and Where Have All The Flowers Gone didn’t change this. They were just things that happened during this time.
Something new has been happening in my life during the last week or so. I’m listening to whole albums again. I haven’t done this in a very long time. This has happened because we have a new business that’s going pretty well. We have an e-Bay store. Jackee goes out and finds things at Goodwill that she buys for 59 cents, and we sell them for 59 dollars. Well, I’m exaggerating a tiny bit. But, this has almost happened a few times. We usually make a least $10 on most sales. My job is to take pictures of these things. I have a photo studio set up in the hallway of the second floor of our house. About a week ago, I took the stereo system that we had on the back porch up to one of the bedrooms that’s next to the hallway and set it up on a dresser. This was a receiver (that gets FM) a CD player that holds 5 CDs and speakers. I went down into the basement and dug out a cassette player. I have a “professional” one made by Marrantz that has automatic reverse. I have at least a hundred cassettes and I’ve been playing them. Just finished one with all of Barry Manlow’s hits. I have all of the Trio cassettes that were made of the albums by Collector’s Choice, and all the rest. I’m sure I’ll get around to playing them some time.
Bruce, glad you dropped by.
Also……..I still have your pillow.
It’s in the store.
You should get it before someone else does.
