It had nothing to do with not wanting the children to be HRH prince/princess. Quite the opposite. Both of them were angry that the late Queen refused to grant LPs making their children HRH Prince/Princess at birth as she did for William and Catherine's children.
The titles they rejected were the courtesy titles associated with the Sussex dukedom. If their children couldn't have what George, Charlotte, and Louis were given, then the children would do without. Perhaps they feared if the children used the Sussex titles, Charles would decide there was no need for them to be upgraded and that Charles would issue new LPs limiting the HRH Prince/Princess style to the descendants of William.
I'm not sure just what bombshell we have missed. We have been in a never-ending cycle of reported olive branches being offered by either the twosome or Charles, followed by reports that reconciliation is just around the corner, followed by reports that they will return to the UK only if their list of conditions are met (usually requiring that they receive a public apology and they be allowed a half-in/half-out roll.)
This nonsense has been going on for almost six years. To put it crudely, I ran out of f's to give regarding this drama long ago. I wish the media would do the same.
