Gonzaga Prep

I attended Gonzaga Preparatory High School last night as a fan of the sport and member of the HS sports community. No dog in the fight for either school. I attended because I know how talented both programs are in talent. Incredible.

I left disgusted in the lack of sportsmanship of the Gonzaga Prep athletes. It was something I have never seen in watching HS sports for 30 years. As a member of the Jesuit community, I was embarrassed. It was gross and disappointing. They are very talented wrestlers, but actions speak loudly. The coach did nothing to correct the behavior, but an Administrator on site seemed bothered. Ironically, this is really the first time Gonzaga has been formidable in the past 20 years. The coach should re-evaluate the Jesuit values of the institution and hold his athletes to that standard.

Sorry man..... Wrestling is about one person attempting to impose their will over another so as to become dominant and victorious while fans enjoy the display of one human being dominating another.
Including you I might add.

At it's core, there is nothing "Jesus Like' about it.

Most of their athletes are not "Jesuit" they are hired guns brought in by BO to make the program relevant.

Unfortunately the head coach is only there because he is in building.

Rumor is most of the kids are out after this year because while they enjoy wrestling they do not enjoy the "Jesuit" life style and school.

After the season they will all enter the transfer portal back to places far far away: Davenport, CdA, Ferris ect.

I know they can recruit but there is also a stipulation that you can't wrestle for a coach at a new high school if you have wrestled for them at a club in the prior 365 days.

I can't remember the exact WIAA rule number it is but I know it's there.

The WIAA and GSL turned a blind eye to this and let it slide.

It's what it is at this point, put on your big boy panties and scrap

It is my understanding that the WIAA has already been contacted due to last night's activities. I was not aware a club coach recruited many of the athletes. That explains why they are suddenly doing do so well, because the head coach has done nothing since being there. The coach is part of the Jesuit community and should hold his athletes to higher esteem.

Brian Owen knows what he is doing. On the INWTC website he listed himself as only the 5th grade coach. That of course is not true. GPrep only has Danny as the coach. With a recruiting center right on preps campus Brian has been planning this for his son for a decade. schools like LC or Ferris cannot have a feeder club because district 81 charges so much money to rent a room the parents cannot afford to build a club. If they send their kid to INWTC then Owen's is waiting to recruit them, Rocky Little from Ferris is a perfect example. Quite a slick situation for prep.

I do not mind the recruiting, as long as kids enter within the parameters. For me, it was the disgusting display of sportsmanship displayed. Coach allowed it as though he was intimidated by his own athletes and parents.

Like Schield? Kid lives in Idaho and even competes for Team Idaho during FS/G. Perhaps he is just there for the education and spiritual growth.

The article missed a bit.
Rocky Little is a transfer sophomore from Ferris. Miro and Ryder red shifted last year so should be sophomores as well. They both should lose their Sr years according to WIAA policy and education policy.

WIAA says you have 6 years of eligibility once you start 7th grade. So in this state you have to hold them back in 6th grade not 8th grade. Unfortunately the WIAA doesn’t enforce their own rules

I’m not sure you can just “say” it. This says it has to be documented academic deficiencies. Is it a coincidence that they all have documented deficiencies??
18.14.0 SEASON LIMITATIONS - After entering or being eligible to enter the seventh grade students shall have
six (6) consecutive years of interscholastic eligibility. If the seventh or eighth grade is repeated, and such
repetition is based upon documented academic deficiencies by the school principal, the repeated year
shall not count against the student’s six (6) interscholastic competitive years. Home school students are
required to provide documentation of academic deficiency to be verified by the school principal.
After entering or being eligible to enter the ninth grade, a student shall have four (4) consecutive years of
interscholastic eligibility.
For the purpose of this rule, consecutive shall mean starting on a designated date and continuing without
delay or interruption for four (4) consecutive years. For the purpose of interpreting this rule,
interscholastic eligibility exists for a maximum of six (6) years after entering or being eligible to enter the
seventh grade and four (4) consecutive academic years after entering or being eligible to enter the ninth
grade, and as long as the total years of eligibility (grades 7-12) do not exceed six (6) years. Application of
this rule shall not be determined by years of participation in individual sports or sport seasons.

This is what we have as a culture. These kids are put up on a pedestal like they are blue chips while they are still in middle school. Parents shop them out to be recruited and feel like they need to be held back a grade in order to get theirs. Are we shocked when they act up? We’ve created this. It’s kinda sad.

Yeah the wizards of smart at the WIAA actually have a system where each school is to investigate itself for violations and then turn themselves in. It is truly incredible how naive and incompetent a governing board can be.
Owen kid and his two buddies that all redshirted last year to get as much of an advantage over their opponents as possible will still get 4 years of HS wrestling and the WIAA will do nothing.

Well, let's hope the athletic director is accountable and takes the proper action. Perhaps prayer and reflection will endure? The local GSL Athletic Directors could push for accountability as well.

Well maybe someone will stand up for all the city schools who do not have their own recruiting center right on their campus, cannot afford to rent a room in district 81 to have a feeder club and know if they send their wrestlers to the INWTC, Owen is waiting to recruit them and offer them scholarship money.

I expected more from Eastern Washington, but I guess the liberals from King County have infiltrated this last bastion of Real Rassling as the efforts of Coach Owen & Gonzaga Prep are under attack. Unbelievable.

Stop thinking of Gonzaga Prep as a Washington State PUBLIC School, it's not.

Coach O is a surly, cranky SOB AND an outstanding Coach, get over it.
He creates winners and finally has a place to build a championship program.

Hat tip to the PRIVATE SCHOOL Gonzaga Prep administration for looking to the East Coast to see the possibilities!

Does North Warren HS in New Jersey piss and moan about Blair academy?
Does Johnstown HS or Richland HS complain about nearby Bishop McCort HS?

More private schools need to figure this out.

If only Seattle's Bishop Blanchet could build a 3000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art training facility and get an Olympic-level coach to build a West Coast RTC for a true East-West Washington Rivalry!

It would appear the gprepper who posted this knows things most of dont. A state of the art training center??? INWTC is state of the art? And of course who doesn't think BO is an Olympic level coach? Gable, Zadick, Terry Steiner, Zeke Jones, Brian Owen. Wow, yeah I mean Owen is beating up a bunch of city schools, who can't recruit, while he offers out of town and state kids money for school. Dont forget he had to talk a few of them to sit out their 8th grade year including his own son so they could really crush Shadle Park, and UHigh. I believe BO should be put in the WIAA hall of fame this year, I mean why wait. Get it done before he gets hired to coach our next Olympic team.

Well, it’s unfortunate. Sounds like the coach could be the the old official who was on the mat for the finals with Toppenish and Orting.

Those kids will continue to struggle without accountability.
