Heard a kid was putting other wrestlers asleep while wrestling. Apparently coaches got into it.

I hear the JV refs were able to do a better job than the old, fat refs that state usually attracts. Not going to name anybody but you guys know who you are. If you are over 65 your senior citizen butt needs to stay at the old refs home.

The officiating at state was far better than before. The young ones did great. The old fat refs are done. I know I wanted to do three days in a row because I am physically ready and able. All it took was a couple of old fat bad knee having should be retired to the couch varsity refs to ruin it for everybody.

Not sure if everyone knows this but I think its a scam how the refs at state are determined. Apparently they wont allow a ref to be there 3 years in a row. State should have the best refs, even if they've been there 10 years in a row.

If you're truly "in the know" then you'd know that the real scam was how they were selected previously.

The "2 in, 1 out" policy (started this year) is an effort to cut down on the "good ol' boy" system which prevented good up and coming officials to get a chance.

And you know what? The ref pool was pretty good with a lot of younger officials. There were a few that weren't quite there, but that also comes with the territory of doubling the pool of both refs and wrestlers.

The old "top 12" system was good in theory, but then you realized that the top 12 were determined based on seniority and association politics than actual skill. Ask yourself why you don't see many officials in their 30s and 40s (most are in their 50s/60s and we're seeing quite a few in their early/mid 20s). It's good that we are seeing change across the board (changing policies to give opportunities to deserving officials and a real movement amongst coaches to cut down on verbally abusing the refs, especially the newer ones).

WOA and WIAA will believe that all was perfect and will not change a thing. That is the real scandal.

Remember next year there will be a dual meet team tournament to decide the state championship. How this will be conducted is unknown to me. Single elimination will be best. The four left at the end sill be top four teams in state. Will every school that has at least 8 wrestlers in the lineup be eligible? Probably not.

The dual meet tournament will crown a state champion thus, points will no longer be scored at the individual tournament.

As for officials, oh man, there will be some damn fine dual meets near the end of the tournament. Looking forward to next year already.

They will still be keeping points at state the same way next year. Zero change in that. East side will still be getting beat again.

The only way that a score is kept at individual state is if the classification did not have a dual state tournament. Boys 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A will not officially keep score. The dual meet team champ will be the state champion.

I imagine that girls 4A and 3A should have a dual state tournament. All the other classifications don't have enough schools with at least 8 weight classes represented for a dual meet. I know the rule book states that 7 weight classes are needed for a dual, I am a fan of eight.

I guess we will see. I know what I will be an advocate of when decision time comes at my level.

The WIAA is not sponsoring the dual meet state tournament, the Washington State Coaches Association is.

The individual state tournament will still crown the state championship team, the dual meet title is separate.

This is the only way.

The top 8 from previous year are auto in. The dual champs for the current per league are in. If there are repeats, there is a committee to pick at large teams to make a 16 team bracket.

I dont disagree that the "good ole boy system" needs to go. But it wasnt 100% based on that. I think some good refs are being pulled from it because they had been the 2 previous years. I dont know the best way to do it but I do know I want the best refs reffing. Can we eliminate the "good ole boy" system and still get the best officials there? Im not a fan of every official gets a shot. I want the best officials there. How can we make that happen?

The system of sending refs to state can be improved. Right now the system is each association sends their perceived best. It is true that some of those best are done but they don't think so. So, the old, fat, slow moving, unable to bend over, one eyed and double knee brace wearing guys continue to show up in Tacoma.

I like the two and sit rule. A smart association will adopt an every other year plan for the membership. A rotation of sort, if it has more than enough folks ready for state. Send a young person and watch them get addicted to officiating.
