Mat Classic

Tickets went on sale this morning, and it looks like WIAA has managed to make the new format even more frustrating. All Tournament tickets are not an option. If you want to watch all 3 days, you have to buy a 2 day and a 1 day ticket. Small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, but seems like that should have been a very simple option to offer.

Who wants to bet that they haven't fixed the problem of getting wrestlers in the door? I'm sure it costs them more to open one more door, so they don't care how long the line is....

Brackets will be seeded in the order of wrestlers making it inside the building. 1st come 1st serve.

● Seeding criteria shall be based on varsity results listed in TrackWrestling from the entire season.

1. Head to Head record between the two wrestlers this season

2. Highest winning percentage versus common opponents this season

3. Highest returning Washington State Tournament place from previous year

4. Winner of qualifying tournament this season ○ Most varsity wins this season

5. Most wins in previous Washington State Tournament

6. Wrestlers are still tied, each receives a ½ point 2024-2025

● Alternates will only be entered into the tournament through Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 12pm

Alternates not entered by the deadline will not be issued floor passes

I'm not so sure about where the poster named Post_Season SOPS got the listed criteria. Some of it looks familiar, but I doubt WIAA uses TrackWrestling as a source for any kind of separation or seeding. Maybe times have changed.

"Seeding" at the WIAA state tournament isn't the kind of process you would find at other tournaments.

One of the major breakout criteria was whether or not you won your regional. Regional winners used to get their own QTR of the 16 man bracket. Then they used a "Criteria" to seperate those 4. I guess you could call it "Seeding". I'm sure there was more to it then that, but that's the nutshell.

Now with 32 man brackets, I'm not sure of the process.

All that being said, even the posters list above accounts for districts. It would be number 4.

Sure enough, per the SOIP, WIAA seeds the tournament based on information in Trackwrestling.

Are HS leagues/tournaments/duals even required by WIAA rule to upload results to Track?

There's quite a bit of wrestling in WA that isn't documented in Trackwrestling. It's so inconsistent, I just assumed using Trackwrestling was optional for tournament directors and HS programs/leagues. If it isn't optional, many HS events treat it as optional.

Guess it can all be sorted out in a seeding meeting......or not.

Coaches are responsible for uploading the information on trackwrestling if the event was not ran on trackwrestling

There are so many errors in how schools enter their results into TrackWrestling. For starters, if a school or tournament does not identify each match as a varsity, junior varsity or even as an extra match TrackWrestling will assume it was a varsity level match. This will greatly influence season records. The WIAA should have be a committee review the analysis that TrackWrestling produces. Most of the team sports have gone to a committee to seed their tournaments...wrestling should do the something similar.

WIAA has no clue what they are doing. They can't get people inside a building. You think they are going to understand Track? They are happy to keep adding things for Coaches to do in Track like adding weights all the time and all of this, but have not clue how to even do it themselves.

Garbage in/Garbage out.

With over 500 coaches responsible for data entry, INCONSISTENCY will rule the day.

They need to scrub what Track comes up with.

BUT even though you sometimes see a train wreck coming from miles away, it doesn't mean there isn't a train wreck.

The state has been telling us all year to put in accurate information into Track. Most do, some don't. In tournaments that coaches are compliant, the seeding works pretty well. Some never update records, so a lot of 0-0 records and sometimes coaches inflate records to help out their wrestlers. There will definitely be some growing pains with this first state tournament. If done correctly, it's good but we'll see how accurate schools are this year.

I'm wondering on how they will do seeding?. some 1 seeds are in weak districts that the brackets will look very different after two rounds.

Two refs for critical matches

Just a bit of reassurance to everyone concerned about having 72 referees, some of which will be first timers to Mat Classic. Keep in mind for the most critical matches - championship semi-finals and finals, there are 2 referees on the mat. So, imagine your worst case scenario where a less experienced official is on the whistle, there will be a second official as their Assistant on that same mat. Having 2 trained and qualified officials on a mat is an insurance policy to help us increase the probability that we get the calls 100% correct.

And those that simply want to bash away at referees, I'm sure you will post something critical/skeptical. So be it - I'm just trying to give you information.

Great, reminds me of the joke what is worse than one cat stuck in a tree? What is worse than one new ref on the mat?

With all the new refs maybe the tournament could use Casebeer and Pizzuto as head officials.
