Hi all...again!
Having a run of bad ones this month!!
Have a golf with windows and mirrors that are not working as they should. Simply, the windows will not work at all, neither do the mirrors. This is what I have found.
Car has been previously worked on; various points in CAN lines cut open but then reconnected as part of previous diagnosis. I know why they have been doing this as I have know found this:
With the drivers/passenger door can lines o/cct, the windows will work independently of their individual switches. However, after 20 mins, the door controls lock out until you remove power from them and the whole cycle repeats. With the lines connected, the windows will not work at all but the central locking system does even sending can data, high and low, to the other locks. So in summary, as a complete system, the windows will not work! Would like to add that I do not have any comms with scan tool when acquiring comfort system or door electronics. I can communicate with instrument cluster and engine ECU...no fault codes othe that oil level sensor which was flagged many moons ago before this problem occurred.
What I have is this: 1. After battery reconnection and comfort module removed...windows will operate individually for approx. 20 mins then lock out.
2. After battery reconnection and comfort module fitted, no windows or CAN activity other than central locking.
What I have done to date: 1. Inspected and tested a-pillar wiring...all good. 2. Know good comfort module...no change in operation as described above. 3. Disconnected CAN lines at various points...no difference. 4. Tried known good window regs...no change
It is driving me crackers!!!!! Has anybody seen this before. Any pointers would be a help.
Many thanks, Andrew
Re: Golf 1.9TDI GT TDI 2002 - In-op windows and mirrors
When I scope the CAN lines whilst pressing the lock switch and remote, with everything connected, the data looks good. If I open circuit the CAN lines at the window motors, the windows will operate. Whilst the windows are motoring up and reconnect the lines, the motors will instantly stop working until I removed the can lines from them.
Looking at the circuit diagrams, everything seems to point at the comfort module, but I know it isn't that as I have a working spare. I am completely lost at the moment. I will have to get hold of some more detailed diagrams other than my autodata ones I guess.
Will spend some time on it over the weekend and see what I can come up with.
Thanks, Andrew

Hi, It seems different to the two I have had on skoda fabias, you get complete shut down of windows and it nearly always a faulty door module, which on these models are built into drivers reg. Shane
Re: Golf 1.9TDI GT TDI 2002 - In-op windows and mirrors
I decided to wait until the end of the day yesterday to dedicate some good diagnostics time to this one.
I know that the regs are good on this. The customer bought the car with this known fault. Fortunately as part of the original owners attempt at getting it repaired he purchased two used, known working spare regs!!!
I reconnected all the can lines and scoped them. Central locking can data good whilst pressing the lock switch. Windows operational for around 20 minutes then lock out. Reset the regs to get windows working but this time whilst scoping can lines for lock data, I reconnected the comfort module. Ahhhh, CAN high baseline now pulls down, although data is present, when pressing lock switch. I concluded that the comfort module pulling the line down! The regs don't like this and stop the windows working.
I then scoped the data link line to the comfort module as I have not been able to scan it. Scan tool sending data to the pin, but no response. Pulled out the diagrams to see if the module was missing anything. Bingo...pin 5B is missing a +12V!!!! When I say missing, the wire and contact isn't fitted! Applied power to the pin and up came the CAN high line, communication restored to comfort module and the windows now working correctly. Fortunately I had the proper contact as I had previously repaired speed sensor housing and wiring I am now down to getting the mirrors to work so will spend some time today sorting that out.
I have no idea why the line is missing, but needless to say I am pleased it is up and running for now. However, when pulling the kick panel away, I found cut off connector laying there which happens to fit a single connector comfort module???!!
I will post all the fixes once I have found the problems.
As you say Shane...normally just a case of changing the regs...just wish this was as straight forward as that

Re: Golf 1.9TDI GT TDI 2002 - In-op windows and mirrors
Hello Andrew, Slightly off topic I know, but this is a problem which I have been having lately where you have to think "what monkey has been here before me?" I've just done a year 2000 Iveco Horsebox with faulty main and dipped beam lights and cranking/starting issues which has taken over 9 hours to repair because of somebody else's attempt to a short lived repair, luckily though the owner is happy to pay. I don't like to be beaten so came to an agreement on price. Not wanting to pry too much but how will you be charging out such a job? Ian.
Re: Golf 1.9TDI GT TDI 2002 - In-op windows and mirrors
One of those difficult ones!!! 9 hours...that is a long one, but it does happen!
In this case I spent approx 3 hours reconnecting the poorly repaired wiring so the bill was around 120. Getting to the bottom of it took a further two hours of just reading diagrams and comparing the theory and the reality. Once I understood what was in front of me I then scoped and tested for an hour. A further 1.5 hours of repairing and putting back together. So the bill-would- have been closed on £300. There customer became so despondent with the car, he asked me to make him an offer. I said £600 (just off the cuff) and he accepted! He would have been happy with the £300 but considering history of vehicle he no longer wanted it.
In this case £300 is cheap. Previous owner paid at least £400 and fault still not repaired.
This may or not help.

Re: Golf 1.9TDI GT TDI 2002 - In-op windows and mirrors
Thanks Andy, Yes a Horsebox camper conversion thingy where you cannot tilt the cab just small access panels all held in with loads of screws Its not always the time spent directly on the vehicle as many hours can be spent doing "Home Work" that can't be charged out. Thanks again, Ian.
