Ford Ka 1.3 2004 - Smart charge fault - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.3

car came in battery light on
checked at battery not charging
removed smart charge connector
no output from alternator
fitted new alternator all ok
next day customer rang up engine management light on
code read P1632 Smart alternator faults sensor / circuit malfunction
fault code will not clear although eml has gone off
checked wiring to smart charge plug
pin 1 has continuity from ecu
pin 2 has continuity from ecu
pin 3 has battery voltage

scoped pin 1 & 2 with engine running
have uploaded patterns
never scoped smart charge system before so dont know if i have
used correct settings
the patterns do not vary even when all loads are turned on
which was told they should
bit stuck as what to do next any advice gratefully received

Hi Mark,

This was in the archives and gives a test procedure, I have a smart alternator tester that plugs into the alternator 3-pin and simulates the PCM function for testing these.There is another post from Ford Eleckie who used to be a member which gave a really detailed explanation but I can't seem to find it in the archives.

Other thing to note, the wires break in the loom to the 3-pin,so give a good tug to check integrity,

I have scoped Mondeo alternator smart signals and the pin 2 request signal only changes very slightly.In yor case I am not too keen on the first trace,it looks "dirty" to me.Is this a genuine Ford alternator or an aftermarket model?

Andy alternator is brand new but not ford genuine
We were pressed for time and that is what we could get quickly
I think may have to bite the bullet and fit genuine
I thought the patterns were not super but had nothing to compare with
Pity its not a 10 minute job
Thanks for all your input

Hi if the alternator does not cure the fault.We had a ka with a similar fault which turned out to be water in the ecu plug.The ecu is located behind the n/s dash,there was no sign of water until we removed the plug from the ecu and various pins had corroded off.I have since spoke to a ford tech and this is a known fault.If you want any info on accessing the ecu give us a call on 01379643461.

Found some smart charge patterns posted by Dave Hill
After comparing with with our patterns ,decided to remove alternator and replace with ford one
fault code instantly cleared and system appears 100%
Aftermarket alternator not up to it ?
The ford alternator was on offer and came out cheaper
Everydays a school day
