This was in the archives and gives a test procedure, I have a smart alternator tester that plugs into the alternator 3-pin and simulates the PCM function for testing these.There is another post from Ford Eleckie who used to be a member which gave a really detailed explanation but I can't seem to find it in the archives.
Other thing to note, the wires break in the loom to the 3-pin,so give a good tug to check integrity,
