Hi Peter, I assume that the ignition light comes on when the ignition is turned on, ?? and then nearly goes out when the engine is started, and then comes on bright again. ??
If so, check the voltage at the D+ terminal (warning light)on the alternator when the engine is running and the light is at it's brightest, the voltage should be very close to the B+ terminal, (usually within 0.25v difference), if it is much more, it will start making the light glow, If the voltage is a lot more than B+, I would suspect a diode problem, if it is a lot less, I would suspect a dodgy regulator. ( I am not sure whether that type of alternator is 9 diode, or whether it has a digital regulator).
