Hi Tony,
Re the alignment Tony mentioned- I belive it refers to the belt not running in the centre of the sprockets causing premature failure of the belt. You crank it by hand first (as usual!) then watch it running. If the belt is badly out of line the pump has a tilt adjustment you can alter by undoing three bolts under the pump. I can send you the VW bulletin I have if yours needs adjusting.
