VW Passat 1.8 Auto 1992 - Water temperature light flashing continously Archived Message

Seem to be having lots of problems this week!!
Customer complained of water temperature light flashing continuously and gauge not reading any temperature. I replaced the four pin sender adjacent to top hose and the light is now ok but still no gauge reading. Does this sensor do gauge and light or is there another sender somewhere? Customer is now not sure if the gauge had gone down before the light problem. It was the light that drew her attention to the gauge and she isn't sure that the gauge had been faulty prior to this.
    Cheers
