    Hi Luke,

I'd agree 100% with Micheal + John above and know how you feel as I've got that T shirt too.
What you are looking for (on top of training etc) is experiance, the one thing you cant buy but in the diagnostic game costs us more than anything else!

I moved from a small independant to a dealer, onto a Bosch center, and finally opened my own place last year.
Each time was a new challenge and this is when you learn more. If you do not make your brain think through problems you do not learn.
Each time I had moved was because of how you feel now DEAD END, and each move was a breath of fresh air.

My advise would be to get some dealer experiance first, even just for six months or a year and if your thinking of specialising in any makes in the future then go for that.
There are some excellant dealer techs out there but in general from a diagnostics point of view you will learn more about how not to fix cars but what you will get is experiance on how they deal with diagnostics, warrenty, customers, pricing and how much/easily they upsell from servicing on items that most independants overlook.

Also you will see the differance it makes to use a proper dealer level diagnostic tool + info system instead of the crap we are used too!
This is invaluable later when dealing with customers with difficult problems as you can explain exactly what will happen if they want to take their car to the dealer.

Also it seems easier to get another job in an independant when you have dealer experiance so you can use this to get the job you want then.

Good diag techs are rocking horse s*it now as are good techs willing to learn diagnostics so when it comes to job interviews put forward your own questions about training + development, any employer who is interested in your development will take this as a positive attitude, anyone who takes it differantly is looking for a 'yes' man and is no good for you.

Try to look for somewhere that has access to regular technical training, the Bosch network was good for me but there are others now.

The last place I worked in I felt like you do now for the last few years I worked there and I can honestly say I learned more in the first six months of working for myself that I did in the five years previous to that!

You have the interest required so don't let people wear you down, set your targets and work towards them.

    Regards, Sean
