    Hi Luke,

It certainly does sound like you have the right approach to the job, It sounds like you will never realise your full potential if you end up stuck where you are now for the rest of your working life.

All too often now Garages are prepared to read a code, fit a part and hope for the best. they perpetuate the myth that the computer tells us whats wrong. and if they fail to fix it, they blame their computer/software/harness and tell the customer that I have a computer that is better than theirs that tells me EXACTLY whats wrong.

When or if I manage to convince the customer that the computer my not tell me what is wrong but may give me a clue as to what to test, they still think I will have it diagnosed and fixed instantly and in no time atall and all for less than the prioe of a cup of tea!!

Very few gargaes admit they are out of their depth and don't have a clue as to what is going on with the cars electrics and electronics. Very few of them will explain the job is not easy and will need someone who can spend the time using the right equipment and test methods to fix these faults.

A vehicle may have been to half a dozen garages who can't diagnose or fix it but they still expect me to be able to plug my computer in and instantly tell them whats wrong and how much it will cost.

Most garages now take the easy pickings ie jobs that do get fixed by doing a code read and fitting a part. this does happen a lot more than is good for our trade. Then they start guessing at other bits untill they use up the customers budget, then it comes to us but now we have to fix it quick and cheap because they have had it two weeks and spent a fortune in bits and the customer is kicking off etc etc.

The biggest boost to the aftermarket and OE parts supply industry in the last 20 years has been serial diagnostic tools as these in the hands of the unconverted have been responsible for more unrequired parts being fitted to cars than anything else. in fact the synic in me would suggest that these tools were invented by the parts industry to boost their coffers!

    Mike
