This is the only posting I have read here lately that makes me want to reply.

Very well said Mr Whitworth it sounds just like the daily occurrences in my workshop.

Its funny we are at different ends of the country but get exactly the same things happening.

Even the local dealers just fit parts at a code read. They even tell customers if there is no fault code there is nothing wrong with the car.

When our local garages can,t fix a car they send customer to us who always quote the garage as saying we have a better computer. Not as Michael says they have not got the ability to fix it.

The tool sellers spotted a great market to sell premium price tools by frightening there customers into buying them with little interest as to if they could use or benefit from them.

The problem Luke is time in the commercial environement. I only get the pico out when I really have too as it can take a while to set up and get results.

Most small garages see the investment of 4k for a scanner system as a huge investment and want instant return for it. When you aproach the 40k level and are still earning less money in real terms than you did a couple of years ago you realise its not easy money.

What you are going to have to do is invest your own time in playing and learning. Use the pico lots and read all you can. Theres lots on the net now. Just last night I searched youtube for picoscope automotive and watched some interesting autonerdz stuff from america using latest software.

A few years ago the forums were very usefull in learning techniques but I feel now its more easy fixes perpetuating the fit and hope mentality.

When you get a diagnosis wrong spend time to analise why.See how you can improve next time. Use test tools to prove what went wrong. If a scan tool tells you theres a fault try and test so you can practice seeing the actual fault.

Real faulty components on a car are fantastic for learning. Much better than training school faults introduced. So take advantage of them to learn all you can.

If you have the talent and the patience then stick at it its mind blowing sometimes but better than humping gearboxes in and out.

    best regards

    john
