    Just to expand on Davids idea above,this car would originally have been fitted with a 4 brush ,3 speed motor controlled by relay box (attached to the plastic fan housing).These motors were/are a continuous problem area and have been modified to 2 speed using an in line resistor (similar to old BMW e34 model)and relay box,which incidently contains just a few relays soldered onto a circuit board.If it has had the mod fan, you should see the aluminium heat sink type resistor riveted to one of the fan cowling arms.Your problem could be the loss of the first 2 fan speeds if using the original fan system.BTW ,contrary to what it says in this issue of Car mechanics,I have always found the fan motor to be the faulty component ,not the relays.HTH.
