That brings back memories. As a teenager in the late 50s I hung around the tracks in Greenville a lot. Sometime in that time frame the C&O changed their rules so that a second-trick operator position was added at the depot there. He would invite me in often to listen in on the dispatcher's line on a spare headset. It was fascinating to listen to the chat from the DS in Saginaw, the Edmore operator on the Elmdale sub, and all of the open offices in the thumb ("Hello, Harbor Beach."). Meanwhile across town the GTW operator still used a telegraph to talk to the DS and other operators between there and Ashley.
