I'm sure that if the idea of maintaining the old tunnel as a back-up had ever crossed their minds, it was immediately dismissed as cost prohibitive - not to mention nearly useless when considering all of the racks, stacks and high cars that use it today. I remember hearing that it also leaked like a sieve in its final stages - so much so that some employees maintained that it was the only way CN's engines got washed. Good story anyway. I thought I had heard that the portals were indeed sealed up - although deep enough beyond the entrances so as not to be visible. Don't think you have to be too far in to be totally underwater at this point anyway... RandallG
