ps: John Birchler is pretty much spot on about John Phillips.
When I spoke to Bob Shane (backstage, Club de Montreal, in 1980),
two things got Bob angry:

To my best knowledge, John Phillips didn't play the banjo--a good reason he was never considered for the Trio. Also, Frank Werber, who also managed the Journeymen, had little use for Phillips, who was, as one might imagine from his Mamas and Papas days (and for many years afterward), an EXTRREMELY loose cannon. John Stewart tried to convince Werber that the Trio should at least look into recording "California Dreamin', but Werber wanted no part of anything John Phillips touched.
