I think McGuinn, born in 1942, was too young when considered as a replacement for Dave. Phillips, who was born in 1935, wouldn't have been too young to replace Stewart if the need arose. Yeah, Phillips was a talented guy but a difficult character. I could see him getting under Werber's skin.
I'm not sure Frank Werber was completely sold on John Phillips. Personality conflicts, other issues, who knows? Two things for sure. The Kingston Trio performed concerts at clubs, making John Phillips' age a factor (he was too young) and the fact he couldn't play banjo. Not sure a backup banjo picker (even someone as accomplished as Dick Weissman) would suffice.
