All the reports about "caring Charles" came from Mark Bolland. After Bolland was let go, it came out that Charles didn't want to go to France and he was ordered to do so by the Queen. All Charles was worried about was the public would hate him and that the media would blame him. That behavior is creditable if you agree with HG Tudor that Charles is a narcissist. I believe that both the King and the Earl are narcissists, they were both trying to exert control over the other, and by this point in time they've both rewritten in their minds what was said.
