A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said in a statement, “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”

In other words, "Recollections may vary."

The only thing I believe is Charles Spencer is lying, bring on the proof, of he can't, he knows it's his "words" against the King's. He's bringing up how cold the Royal Family was for at least the 10,000 time. Charles was not cold nor uncaring when he flew to France to accompany Diana's coffin back to the UK, he was visibly shaken and in grief.
Charles Spencer has been sitting on burr since Diana's death....it's easier to blame the Royals and back claims than to accept her death was the result of stupid choices, no seat belts on and a very drunken driver.

In the grip of a rage, Charles might well have said it.
We will never know who is right.
But Spencer bringing up such a thing so many years later is totally disgusting. He has behaved disgracefully whether right or wrong.

If Charles did say that, do you think Earl Spencer would have sat on it for nigh on thirty years? No way. He'd have blasted it to every paper and news outlet. He's lying. He wants the book to sell.

William has got to be furious with his uncle over the new book.

I can see him sitting on it. When it happened, if it happened, there was so much else going on and Charles Spencer had cast himself as the caring brother and uncle. Attacking the father of his nephews wouldn't jive with that image.

Both men probably said nasty things and Bolland wouldn't have hesitated to share the Earl's nasty words with the media. And I think the story would have gotten lost among the hundreds of articles that were being pumped out.

IMO, it does sound like something Charles would say in the heat of anger. He thought the media's obsession with Diana would dissipate after the wedding. I can believe him thinking that after she was dead and not around to call up Richard Kay and teh others, that the media would find somebody else to obsess about.

It's been a number of years since the media have bombarded us with Diana articles on the anniversary of her death. Aside from the twosome invoking her name, the only articles mentioning Diana are those claiming that Catherine (or the other one) are wearing her jewelry as a tribute or claiming that their outfit is just like something Dianan wore.

All the reports about "caring Charles" came from Mark Bolland.

After Bolland was let go, it came out that Charles didn't want to go to France and he was ordered to do so by the Queen. All Charles was worried about was the public would hate him and that the media would blame him.

That behavior is creditable if you agree with HG Tudor that Charles is a narcissist.

I believe that both the King and the Earl are narcissists, they were both trying to exert control over the other, and by this point in time they've both rewritten in their minds what was said.

Incorrect. Yes, there was an arguement between the late Queen and Charles. But it was over the fact that Charles wanted to use the Royal Flight to go to Paris and the Queen did not think that was appropriate. Ultimately the late Queen backed down and Prince Charles did go to Paris with Diana's sisters, Lady Jane Fellows, and Lady Sarah McCorquodale.

I know he went. The point was that he wasn't that tower or strength making all the decisions and that the Queen was incapable of coping, which was the narrative Bolland put out.

In retrospect, it's a wonder that many people accepted Bolland's version. Charles was a quivering mass of jelly when his grandmother died and needed to lean on his sons and Camilla to buck him up. And he didn't rise to the occasion when his friend was killed in that avalanche and needed his aides to persuade him that the proper thing to do was to return home rather than to continue his skiing vacation.

I've read and heard that Earl Spencer is practically broke after his multiple divorces and is desperate for money. Apparently visitors to Althorpe have gone down over the past few years, too. He's on the outs with his children from his first marriage as well. I wonder if Jane and Sarah are still in contact with him? I also wonder if he tried to hit Them up for cash, only to find They are as broke as he is...

A part of Spencer's interview was previewed on the BBC World Service and Charles Spencer went all out on the interviewer and raised his voice at her. He's right and the Palace and everyone else is wrong. "I'm telling the truth!!" If you're so riled and defensive at a reporter's questions, then perhaps everything you wrote was not all the truth.
I see everyone's points. An unexpected death is horribly stressful, the Spencer's lost a sibling and the Royal Family lost the mother of the POW's children and of the Queen's grandchildren. The Royals also had to put up with the media making things worse by accusing the Queen/Royal Family of not putting on a show of grief and "caring" in public.
Both Charle's are know to have tempers and I can imagine Spencer calling the POW and railing at him and the POW responds in kind. The POW may have stated that he wanted his sons to walk behind the funeral carriage as a special meaning for them because as they grow older, memories of that day may fade in time. I'm just purely speculating on this and Spencer took the info as he now states.
I still think he's lying. It's all to get money that he's lost by marrying so many times and now having to pay out. It appears the majority of the public isn't buying his allegation. I agree wholeheartedly he's had 29 yr. to bring this all up, but waited until now, conveniently after his weasel nephew brings the subject up and Spencer is now strapped for cash. Diana has been gone for 29 yr. and yes, memories have waned with the public and there are young people who don't know her and really she isn't an interest to them.
It's interesting it's all about Harry being forced to walk behind the funeral carriage when I've read William first brought up a reluctance and Prince Philip told the boys he would walk with them, Spencer never said that.....

Charles Spencer Claims Charles Was "In Love With His Valet" As Told By Diana

Posted by karenl on September 18, 2026, 10:59 pm, in reply to "Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC"

"He penned in the book that once Diana called him on a lunch to tell him she wanted to part ways from Charles because he had allegedly fallen for someone else.

Earl recalled, "I was silent for a moment. I had known things were bad, but not this bad.

"'Well, Duch' I carefully replied, 'you of course have my full support… I know you’ll have thought this through. But my main worry is the public. I fear they won’t forgive you. They’ve bought into a fairytale, and I reckon they may well – wrongly – blame you for destroying their fantasy.'

He continued, "She looked up at me, nodded, and said quietly: 'But, Carlos, my husband is in love with his valet.'

"I gulped. 'Well, I guess, in that case, you really don’t have a choice.' She did not name the member of staff, and I never asked her who it was, or why she would believe such an improbable thing. It was not important: the end of her marriage, and of her dreams, was."

Oh, Heaven's sake! Sorry, Charles, but Diana was a liar and full of delusions. Prove it, oh, but you can't. Charles Spencer could find himself in Court for libel and defamation.

Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC

Posted by Hollie24 on September 18, 2026, 11:13 pm, in reply to "Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC"

I think Prince Philip was right about Harry and William regretting later on not walking behind their mother's coffin, and instead of Harry whingeing about "being made" to walk, we'd have gotten "they didn't allow us to walk." Philip understood all the pressures his grandsons were facing; he had the tragedy of losing his sister and her husband and sons and he walked behind their coffins when he was sixteen.

Earl Spencer has no room to claim the moral high ground, and he doesn't give a flying caboose about how this book affects William and Harry or even his sisters, Sarah and Jane--especially Jane, because of her late husband's position.

Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC

Posted by karenl on September 19, 2026, 2:49 am, in reply to "Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC"

Absolutely correct, and we know if it had been decided that William and Harry should not walk behind the funeral carriage, Harry would have complained that "he" was left out...never mind his brother and Charles Spencer would said the same about Harry.
I would think Sarah and Jane are appalled, as you stated, this affects them and their families.
It's been reported that William is absolutely furious at Charles Spencer. You know George and Charlotte are both old enough to learn about what's been written about their grandfather. Charles Spencer is a vile, arrogant, self centered little man. All he has is his newest wife for support and his identical minion Harry. He's lost any relationship with William forever.

Hollie, I wonder if Charles Spencer felt more emboldened to write the book now that Robert Fellowes passed. I don’t think William will trust Charles Spencer’s decedents to care and not exploit his mother’s remains. I predict Diana will be moved to a royal setting once William is king.

Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC

It has nothing to do with Robert Fellows passing. It's all to do with the 30th Anniversary of Diana's passing next year and being in cahoots with Hasbeen to stir up as much problems and hassles for King Charles and William.

Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC

Posted by Hollie24 on September 19, 2026, 4:17 pm, in reply to "Re: Charles Earl Spencer gives an interview with the BBC"

It has to do with money, pure and simple. The Earl and He need it, and don't give a flip about the impact of their actions on others.

I think William is close to Jane's children. She is one of the Duke of Kent's godchildren, and her daughter is godmother to Charlotte. I don't know how close he is to Sarah's children. I imagine that what Earl Spencer is doing is painful to them all.

Charles Spencer: Press has 'cancerous influence' on Harry and Meghan's lives

(I'm posting this in this thread because it more about Spencer than it is about Them).

The full broadcast of the interview by the BBC is at 6:30pm tonight here in the UK. I will not be watching. In the meantime they have released another clip from the interview where he states:

Earl Spencer has told the BBC that there are similarities between the way his sister Diana, Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been treated by the press.

He said Princess Diana was "brought low" by press criticism of her and that it is a "pity" to see echoes of that in Harry and Meghan's lives now.

He added that people should learn from Princess Diana's example, and that for anyone being "destroyed daily" by the tabloid press, it must be a "cancerous influence" on their lives.

There it is.....the Sussex, Spencer collusion. Spencer is helping Harry to get the taxpayer security. I add that these three won't let Diana rest in peace and being disrespectful to her memory using her as a cash cow.
The respect has always been from her sister's, the King and eldest son.

Is it possible that, if She thought Earl Spencer had a large fortune, would She make a play for him? It's a horrible thought, but I have to admit I can see it happening, what with Her obsession with Diana and the Earl's eagerness to make money off his late sister.

Re: I just had a truly awful thought

Nah, he’s too old for her and there isn’t enough money to bridge that gap.

I think Spencer is using Them to get back at the Windsors, specifically Charles and Camilla. I can see Her being an enthusiastic participant in creating discord, playing herself as a victim à la Diana. I think He has carried a grudge against his own family on behalf of his mother, but without really understanding the dynamics of that marriage.

Well, Earl Spencer may have got a huge chunk of money from the Daily Mail for the serialization of his book, but with the expenses of ex-wives and running Althorp that's run the Diana course a long time ago, he'll be back in the financial dumps in the near future. We know Meghan spends like a fool so it wouldn't work.
In addition, Charles Spencer and Meghan Markle are too much the same personalities, there would be huge clashes. She can't lead him around by the nose like she does with Harry.

Earl Spencer Forced To Apologize To Piers Morgan

Posted by karenl on September 22, 2026, 10:36 pm, in reply to "About the book (not just the DM bits)"

"Charles, Earl Spencer issued a formal apology to Piers Morgan after confirming that he made a mistake in his bombshell new book about his late sister, Diana, Princess of Wales. The Earl's controversial new book, Swan Song, has prompted a war of words with Buckingham Palace after the author claimed the King said "we'll forget her soon enough" after she died and he sounded "giddily elated" in the wake of the crash.

The Earl also took aim at Mr Morgan and wrote that the journalist was working for the Daily Mirror when it published intrusive photographs of her in the gym in 1993. But Mr Morgan didn’t join the paper until two years later."

Piers is going to take legal action.
