The job was booked at 10.5hrs. the nissan parts required amounted to just over £200 (including new tensioner. there is a little gasket with oil strainer required which goes to the head (nissan said it wasnt changed, found it clogged with crap) which makes me wonder if that was restricting oil pressure to the tensioner). remove the os headlight to gain access to the timing end,the end cover removal is very straight forward to be honest (1hr) but to remove the cover itself you need to remove the sump (driveshaft also) as it is doweled into the cover which still looked straight forward as my technician was only on 1.5hrs at this stage!
The sump will Not come down when all the bolts are removed, this is where the gearbox is "supposed" to be removed!! all that stops it is a stupid tin plate sandwiched between the box and sump/engine which doesnt seem to serve any purpose! prise (bend) the plate with a very firm touch and the tap a thin scraper between engine and sump, the sealer is damned tight!! the sump will drop and the end plate removed. the timing is a piece of cake (autodata is correct) due to the timing chain having marks on it to align with the cams and crank. there is not enough clearance between the outside of the cams and the head to remove the chain so the cam gears have to be removed....there is nothing to watch for with the vairiable valve timing, just buzz the pulleys off. rest is just a rebuild APART FROM WHEN YOU MODIFY THE TIN PLATE TO REFIT THE SUMP (CUT IT). with this info the first one can be done in the day, then 4hrs from then on i believe. customers bill was £820 and she was very pleased as nissan had quoted way more.
very good earner of a job after the first 1 guys. hope this helps someone as keiths phone info helped me and saved me 5 extra hours work!
