Mat Classic Seeding Criteria

When brackets are released, remember that each bracket is seeded by criteria in Trackwrestling, and this is different from past years when wrestlers were placed on the bracket based on their finish at Regionals.

Track takes each wrestler and compares them to the other wrestlers in the bracket. Someone will earn a point against the others based on the criteria. This information was given to coaches prior to the season.

Seeding criteria shall be based on varsity results listed in TrackWrestling from the entire season.
--Head to Head record between the two wrestlers this season
--Highest winning percentage versus common opponents this season
--Highest returning Washington State Tournament place from previous year
--Winner of qualifying tournament this season
--Most varsity wins this season
--Most wins in previous Washington State Tournament
--Wrestlers are still tied, each receives a ½ point

Each wrestler will be seeded by the number of points earned.

Seeding Issue in the 110-Pound Girls Bracket

I wanted to bring to your attention a seeding issue in the 110-pound bracket. My daughter, [Daughter’s Name], has been incorrectly placed as the fourth seed when she should be third. Additionally, based on head-to-head results and overall performance, she should actually be seeded second.
• She has already beaten the current second seed twice by major decision.
• The first seed has also defeated the second seed.
• Her record is stronger than the current fourth seed.
• She has been competing at 110 for almost the entire season and has gotten 1st Place every invite except Gut Gut Check. She also has gone many invites without having one point scored on her.

Given these factors, she should not be placed in the same half of the bracket as the first seed. The two best wrestlers should be positioned to face each other in the finals, not earlier. I respectfully request a review and adjustment of the seeding to ensure fair competition.

Please let me know how this can be addressed. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Each wrestler is compared to all others in the bracket and earns 1.0, 0.5, or 0 points against that wrestler.

When you look at the seeding points earned:
Mason 29.0
Dufault 27.0
Erickson 26.5
West 26.0
Dickson 25.5
Werner 22.0

Yes, a wrestler your daughter beat may be seeded higher as they earned more points through all of the criteria.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the seeding. I understand the frustration with how the bracket is structured, especially given that both Winter and Camryn have demonstrated their strength throughout the season.

Looking at the seeding points:
Mason – 29.0
Dufault – 27.0
Erickson – 26.5
West – 26.0
Dickson – 25.5
Werner – 22.0

While I see why the bracket is set up this way based on points, it does seem unfortunate that the two strongest wrestlers will meet in the semifinals rather than the finals. Additionally, considering that one of the seeded wrestlers competed up most of the season while Winter has consistently wrestled at 110, it raises questions about whether the current seeding process fully reflects competitive performance.

Regardless of the outcome between Winter and Camryn, it’s disappointing that one of them will be pushed into a third-place match when they’ve already decisively beaten the second seed. It’s a tough situation, and I appreciate you taking the time to discuss it.

The latest seeding info shows West as having more seeding points than the 3rd seed. So I assume West will move up to 3rd when they redraw the brackets tomorrow morning. It doesn't hurt to have your coach get in touch with the appropriate tournament director to be sure. That's a tough top 4, but Mason and West should clearly be 1-2.

Thank you so much for the update! It’s great to see that the latest seeding info shows West with more points than the 3rd seed—this definitely helps clarify things. I appreciate you taking the time to break it down.

I did hear that there was a meeting with the coaches at 7 PM today. Do you know if that was when the seeding points were reconfigured, or did the changes occur earlier? I’ll have our coach touch base with the tournament director tomorrow morning to confirm everything.

Unfortunately it's changed again, and now West is back to having the 4th most seed points (Or I was looking at the wrong row before). I think it's still worth having your coach follow up. The seeding there seems off and the people deserve a Mason v West finals match.

The meeting was just informational. I don't believe any changes were happening during it.

Thank you for all of your help. Winter’s record should be showing 33-1. So not sure why it is showing otherwise. We will reach out to the coaches and again thank you for all your help.

Please can an actual human look at these brackets with a little common sense! Why would you have 2 sunnyside girls wrestling in the first match? Saw 2 moses lake girls at 105 doing the same thing!

So a wrestler comes down in weight for post, has a lesser winning percentage, no head to head, placed at state, but is seeded higher than someone at weight, more varsity wins, wins at state, higher placing at same tournaments?
Or at same weights at tournaments and A places higher and has better win %, more wins, less losses but B has a state placing. How is B seeded higher than A?

I am confused. Why did Georgina Johnson who took 2nd at Districts get seeded higher than Aleksia Ramirez, who pinned Georgina at Districts? Isn't the whole point of Districts is to get a better seeding at State?
