VW Golf V 1.4 BUD 2007 - No communication steering angle sensor after 3 hours - Fixed #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.4 BUD

This Golf with ABS MK70 has had a new steering rack fitted and has no problems initialising the steering angle sensor.
But after having the car parked for about 3 hours and then switching ignition on it loses communication with the steering angle sensor.
In Steering Assist it comes up with fault code 00778. In the Can Gateway it comes up with the same fault code.
I can go through the steering angle setting procedure again, and it is fine until parking up for a few hours again.

Can voltages seem ok.

Before I start taking the car apart, has anyone come across this before?

Has the vehicle been driven after initialisation ?

Verify all of the WSS (Wheel Speed Sensor) values are plausible in the 03-ABS controller! We received feedback from both Mk70 equipped and MK60 ESP equipped (1K) Golf models with 02546 and 00778 DTCs that would not clear due to a faulty WSS. Even if a WSS DTC is not stored it would be advised to log or graph MVB 001 while driving.

Thanks Dave, yes I read the same thing, so those basics have all been done.
I thought i found it when I found the steering programmed for Mk60; but no such luck.

Just now i re-started the car again and the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. No comms with engine and abs, airbag comm faults etc. etc.

So, i have started taking the battery out to check the loom underneath it. The tape around the loom seems ok so I will carry on cutting the tape to inspect the wiring tomorrow.

Anyone had damaged wiring underneath the battery tray on these Golfs?

Where did the rack come from?Is it a like for like part with the same number of mounting holes? If the system was ok with the old rack,then it is not likely to be a wiring issue.What equipment are you using for diagnostics on this.?

No idea, the car came from another garage who tell me that they replaced the rack because of fault codes. After which codes remained and they apparently replaced the steering angle sensor with cods still there...
The rack looks ok. plug connections as expected.

I'm using VCDS with latest updates on this.

Looks like this is a mess. Any chance of finding out why they changed the rack? Was it after a flat battery condition?

Hi Job,
My bet is on wrong steering rack. Do you have VCDS? A scan with VCDS will probably show you the part number of the rack fitted.

Just spoke to the customer. They fitted the rack for exactly the same reason it is at my garage at the moment.
However, the dash board lit up like a christmas tree again. When I touched the loom at the steering rack the flickering ABS lights went out and the engine/EPC lights went solid and the steering light went from red to yellow. So I suppose the loom going to and over the rack will have some corrosion. Now waiting for a ramp to become free so I can unpack the loom unless anyone else has a better idea :-)
