Oil price comparison and supply #

Year of Manufacture *: 2015

Having a ring round to get the best oil price for our small business and was wondering what other garages are paying.
I was paying £350 + vat from Godfrey Motorworld (now in admin) for 205 litres of 5/30 fully synthetic but also getting free 25 litres of 5/40 fully synthetic.
Pages are now supplying me at £340 + vat.
How does this compare to others please

We pay £445 plus vat for dexos 2 from VAUX trade club !

i pay £325+vat for 5/30 fully c3 petronus from euro. i get my normal 10/40 semi from perrys huddersfield for £199+vat both 210 ltr drums

Hi

How do you manage with one spec of 5/30 ? do you only work on a small range of vehicles ?

I stock 4 barrels of F/S 5/30 each a different spec to meet different applications.

Although we work on a large range of vehicles I find that the expense of laying out Â£1200+ for another 3 barrels of oil beyond our budget. When we get vehicles with a different spec above that which we have then we get it in 25 litres. Cost effective to a certain extent and it works for us.

Fair comment, we are long established and not short of storage room so cash flow and space are not an issue for us.

May be worth thinking about barrel of late (WSS-M2C913-D A5/B5) spec Ford oil when finance allows, normally competitive priced and fast mover for us used in a lot fords, volvos, land rovers and some jap.

T.p.s are always worth a shout. Quantum has a great spec for the money & you can always squeeze the salesman for a better deal!

I always find this one an interesting topic. I believe rightly or wrongly oil is like cornflakes. You get what you pay for. There are many packets in the super markets branded as cornflakes from Lidl's own brand though to Kellogs. You can tell the difference when you try them. There is a difference. Yet all come from the same basic ingredient's. So why such a difference in the end product? Guess oils must be the same?
There is even a body trying to check the oil companies claim about their oils. Which has proved some companies specs not to be as advertised. Cheap oil normally end in small profit. Plus when I have asked the likes of TPS, Vauxhall, Ford and most other supplies to substantiate their claim and provide full spec sheets and vehicle recommended oil guides. Ahh let's say there official spec ect don't tie up with what they are saying/selling. They just sell on price and convenience. Maybe it's just me being diligent and professional
We make good money from good quality oil and have no warranty issues and can count on 3 fingers the turbo's
and DPF issues we have had in 51 years of using the same brand ( which proved to be the drivers fault). Only a opinion. Kind regards John

We use Quantum from TPS (and you can download the spec sheets from their web site), as VAG recommend Castrol for their vehicles I have been reliably informed that is what you are getting; re-packaged Castrol. We tend to stock a lot of 4 and 5 ltrs packs of the different types of lube to cover the ever changing requirements of vehicle manufacturers, maybe not that cost effective but we know we are fitting the right product and buying in enough quantity keeps the price down. And I do believe you get what you pay for, look up the motor oil bible it was free but now I think you have to pay for it, the top brands mostly come out on top according to the algorithms he uses.

There are only a few lubricant blenders, who package accordingly. At the moment we use Vauxhall Trade Club oils. I have a reasonable idea who blends their products, but I'm not 100% sure. They meet all the required spec.

My personal view is that a lot of horse-trading goes on between blenders and car makers, mostly to the detriment of the smaller independent garages and the consumer.

We have just stopped buying 10w40 in barrels. We keep a couple of different 10w30s in barrels and the rest in 25s to satisfy the various makes.

My family ran a 'Shell' branded petrol station for most of the 20th century, 1930s-1990s. We have photos in the archives of 'BP' tankers dropping fuel into the tanks at busy times. Despite this there were consumers that swore that their car ran better on Shell/BP fuel (delete as appropriate).

My understanding is. There are only a few producers or blenders of oil in the UK. They blend for anyone and everyone. But to the spec they are asked to blend too and the price is according. But they keep the highest spec and top additive packages for the premium brands/themselves. That makes sense to me. We believe in best product at best price. The difference between the all makes oil and the premium brands we have found is about £1 per litre. Which adds on average about £3.50 - £5+ VAT @ cost to the average service invoice
Which seems a fair price to pay for quality. And it also says we are a quality business. It is the same as the dealers supply at a much better price. Our customers appreciate this and we are only a small family run independent. Plus if the trade clubs oil are so good. Why won't they use them in there own dealer group workshops? Please could somebody tell me? If you can try and offer dealers service ( or better which is not hard), OEM equivalent parts and genuine honest and fair service at a fair price. The customer think its fantastic and you can make a good living. Or we can offer the cheap end and struggle to earn the real rewards we deserve for our skills,experience and overheads. Again only a opinion. I would like to see the trade and the Good people in it recognized and rewarded. Like plumbers, electricians and gas technicians.

I read an article in a magazine recently which said the dealers oil was a good option to go for as it meets their requirements, they stated the oil wasn't the best but you know what you are getting.
Tps oil is made by castrol but i can't see it being as good as castrol branded products. I tend to use TPS , Castrol, fuchs or Euro as they seem to be ok. I don't have space for a barrel & there is that many different specs i tend to buy them in 25ltrs
I would be great if someone come up with 1 5w/30 that fits all

We used to stock a 5W30 Fully synthetic oil Dexos 2 and a 5w30 fully Synthetic 504/507 VW spec oil but now all we have is the remaining oil of the 504/507 spec. (exol)

Don't think we'll bother now and buy in as we need it using 20ltr drums. Comma oil told us that there are abot 12 different 5w30's so its impossible to stock all of them.

I also don't know if TPS Quantum oil is re-branded Castrol. Can't see any reason for doing that as everyone has heard of Castrol like Mobil One.

Vauxhall oil from what I gather is no long FUCHS oil either and my local rep believes it may be EXOL.

We are using Petronas at the moment we stock 3 different 5W/30 FS and numerous others in 25 or 60lt drums as we all know it's a PITA!
Paying £1.64 for C3 & £3.00 for VAG 507 I think we get some freebies as in more oil added to the order FOC.

We did use Castrol and are probably going back to it soon as they are doing a deal for the Bosch garage network.

Incidentally when we were using Castrol I had bought some equipment from a closed Honda dealership including their oil tank / drums / dispensing kit our Castrol rep was very inquisitive as to where I had got the oil from as it was a product they made and only supplied within the Honda dealerships - I would guess there would be no difference to it's spec from other oil sold to independents but that one had been put forward to meet Hondas own approval? (can't remember what it was called)

All kinds of dire predictions and warnings over not using exactly the right kind of branded/specified oil.
Out of interest, has anybody ever encountered an engine failure or premature wear problem absolutely proven to be directly caused by the 'wrong' oil?
Not the wrong viscosity, but a fully or semi-synthetic that simply does not have the appropriate manufacturers' approval label on the can.
The diesel Vauxhall that I'm driving suffered a turbo failure and came in on the back of a truck, with no oil in the engine.
The customer gave it to me. I replaced the turbo, filled up with oil and 5yrs later I'm still driving it. On the basis that it survived being run with no oil, I'm not sure that running with the wrong spec. oil could do anything to it at all.

What a can of worms,

Like many have already posted, carry a 10/40 semi synthetic and Ford formula F 5/30, would probably have covered most cars 10 years ago, today no way,
I probably stock 7 to 8 5/30 brews, most of the Quantum range in 20l barrels, Ford have a specific ecoboost oil, a recent Volvo I had in used Castrol edge at £16 a litre, nearly a £100 just on oil !!

I have just been cancelled by a customer with an 08 Toyota Auris, Full service and MOT, quoted £200 all in , and Toyota beat my quote, and they would give her a free courtesy car, that must be a loss leader surely ??

It's more likely that the Toyota dealer priced an oil service and it's very possible that the final bill might be higher.
Out of interest we stopped using the term 'Full Service' about a decade ago. Very few makers schedules these days call for everything to be done at once.
I might get shot down for this, but a lot of cars get over-serviced. Most cars these days go about 40,000/4yrs on items once routinely replaced on an annual basis. I'm old enough to remember when exhaust valves didn't last as long as the spark plugs we now fit.

I am sure it is a loss leader, similar happened to one of my customers, the dealer loaned her a new car, increased her invoice by quite a bit over estimate as her old car "had a lot of very corroded nuts and bolts to undo" and by the way "how did you like the loan car, did you realize they only cost £xxx and can be done for £xxx a month"

Dealers and loss leaders - this is oil related

We recently did an Audi A4 2nd 40k service he was at 36k so as everything was being replaced we just advised the DSG box oil wanted doing at 40k.

We priced the oil from TPS the parts man at TPS told us Audi are doing DSG oil service at £150 now I cant remember the exact figures for the oil but I think it left us less than £20 after doing the filter etc (using our filling tool through the drain bung) Surely dealers wouldn't skip changing the filter.

Oil £11.95 / 14.95 x 7lt required
Filter £24.95
Gasket £18.17

Buy my maths that's £126.77 + vat for parts and Audi charge £150.00 inc vat! Go figure!?

Another point is do dealers actually cahrge the RRP, i don't think they do becasue i've invoices from main dealers in servie books that i think how have they managed to do that job at that price.

So when we are quoted £16 per litre of oil are they actually charging it out at that.

Seeking cheaper oil prices, is that a good thing?

At the recent Top Technician one of the seminars was by a Fiat Technician (Fiat UnetVersity) he was giving us an insight into their TwinAir engine technology, one feature of this is the way the valves are lifted via oil pressure from lobes on the camshaft

The last part was dedicated to the OIL that is used and how critical it is for the CORRECT grade to be used. ONLY a C3 5w40 can be used, they normally hold about 3Ltrs, if the customer lets the oil run low and has to top up with say 1 Litre of another oil grade then this is regarded as an emergency top up and a complete oil change has to be done as soon as

He was saying that most of the engine failures are due to the incorrect oil grade or being topped up with the wrong oil. Wrong oil = Warrant Invalidation

The factory fill oil for these is PETRONAS, Petronas has developed oils for the Fiat TwinAir range (also factory fill for Mercedes)

I have been a Mobil Service Centre for about 4 years using Mobil 1 ESP 5w30, but recently I noticed it lost its DEXOS 2 approval, when I asked the rep he did not say much

I have now stopped using Mobil 1 as they will only sell me 208 Litre drums at £1,075 plus vat even despite a slump in oil prices. Working on newer vehicles I need to keep a range that meets the manufacturer requirements

I have been using PETRONAS Syntium 5000 oils (4 specific types) and PETRONAS 3000 5w40 (PD) all of these are in 4 litres. The price from ECP is good even for 4 litres, still leaves me a decent mark up

Shopping on price and buying a couple of 5w30 fits all type oils no longer gives me piece of mind when servicing 2 / 3 year old vehicles

How many engine failures are they getting? Doesn't sound like a recommendation for Fiat products.

Hi Thomas

It's the top end that wears, cam lobes apparently if the wrong oil is used. He said that this is a high revving engine so it will use oil, so I would expect a lot of owners don't check often enough and let it run to low or panic and top up with Halfords oil

I use a Millers 5/30 long life from andrew page part no 5999caa £540 + vat per barrel.
I like it because it has a whole list of manufacturer approval numbers on the barrel and there is less chance of using incorrect grade oil

Glen, did you realise that wont do Ford petrols?
(It will do some diesels)
Focus 2012> is 5/20
Fiesta >2012 5/30 is A5/B5 not C3

It also isn't right for the new Transit Custom either which is WSS-M2C913-D (according to Millers that's: XF LONGLIFE ECO 5w30)

Just a couple of examples of popular vehicles that people think use regular 5w30....

Had a flier from Go Vauxhall Trade Parts Centre this morning

If you want to buy their oil in 199 ltr barrels to cover popular specifications then you are going to have to buy 8 barrels

Days of 2 barrells of 5w30 fits all are fading fast

Oil is now like any other service item, filters plugs etc, it has to be the correct specification, that's why we have changed to PERONAS Syntium comes with VRM lookup

Well aware of that , I get genuine Ford oil in because we do a huge amount of Transits.
But the new Transit custom has its first oil change at 30,000 miles - not convinced that is a great plan !!

Regards DSG service price,I have been buying this oil from TPS up to now, but have recently noticed that MPM now list this oil, our local factor list this oil at £20 for 4 ltres or £8 for 1 ltr

Been meaning to ask this for a while.

On MPM oil, are many on here using it?

I'm using it for about ten years without issue. Always to the recommended spec.
