Audi A4 1.8T AVJ 2001 - Thermostat replacement time? - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.8T AVJ engine

Autodata does not give a time for replacing the map-controlled thermostat on this engine.

Can anyone give me the labour time for this please?

"map-controlled" - that's a new one on me. I know of the PCM controlled ones in Mondeo Duratec ( never had an issue with one - yet!), so, I'd like to know about this, or, is it similar? I cannot deconstruct MAP beyond manifold absolute pressure, my mind just freezes.

Hi Steve,

We have changed these on BFB engined A4's.

IIRC, drain coolant, alternator & throttle body off.
While you are there it may pay to check/renew breather pipes/valves.

Two hours should cover it for the first one.

Malcolm, a normal thermostat only responds to the coolant temperature, a "mapped thermostat" can also be adjusted by commands from a "map" within the ECU.

Thank you for the replies.

Yes, map-controlled, as in the principle of fuel/ignition maps.

Apparently these fail regularly - my favourite local factor stocks them!

A Google search suggests not a five minute job but nothing found for the AVJ engine specifically, though I did find details for the W12 in a Phaeton.

My general approach when asked for a price is to tell the customer that it will cost as long as it takes, minus my learning time, to be fair, plus any time spent putting right other problems, minus
a discount if the bill seems too high at the end (and I'll live on fresh air for the following week...)

I would only fit a genuine thermostat, who pays you for doing the job twice when the non gen part does not operate correctly ?

Glyn, I agree entirely. I usually enquire at this factor to test the availability and possible cost, although they do supply genuine Bosch parts too.

Interestingly, the Audi dealer quoted a price £17 lower than the factor! It's been said before on these forums... worth checking dealer prices.

Thermostat renewed - not too bad a job in the end and without moving the front panel. 1.5 hours including coolant drain/refill.

Extra time required to repair all of the broken and perished breather pipes etc. disturbed as part of the job.
