Hi
This is a general enquiry to see if anyone as had problems with this model whereby when vehicle was parked up for over a week during a period of heavy rain, water migrated into the airbox via the plastic duct which takes air in at the top of the front grille.
It took sometime to get a description of sequence of events but as far as i can gather this is it,when owner came to car after period above. The engine didn't turn over so a recovery operator was called and proceeded to connect a jump pack with same outcome this is where story became unsure but as far as possible he came to conclusion that starter motor was "jammed" and tow started with difficulty. it was then brought to us running albeit lumpy, and smoking when cold.my colleague at this stage removed the airbox which still had water in it and concluded it had hydrauliced when first turned over.the owner wanted to drive to wales in car which we didn't recommend but he did any way without any further damage or symptoms and doesn't seem to be to concerned. we convinced him to allow us to carry out some preliminary checks to confirm our suspicions without major strip downs, this when i got involved and have done the following so far 1 remove fuel injectors and have tested these are ok, at same time insert probe into cyl bores onto top of pistons 1and 4 also 2 and3 these are equal so don't think any bent con rods 2 refit injectors and remove glow plugs carry out compression pressure tests as follows
no1cyl 20bar no2cyl 26bar no3cyl 28bar no4cyl 20bar these seem to confirm to me a compression problem but owner doesnt seem to be as concerned as me he says once engine warms up smoke dies away and performance ok.bottom line as often in this game it boils down to who pays for further diagnosis. sorry for long post but but welcome any input.
hi there your compression issues on 1 and 4 make sense if engine had hydro locked it would have been on 1and4 or 2and3 wonder if it would be worth checking valve clearances and just how far they travel/sticking?? not just me that get the awkward jobs and customers
thanks for reply Martin, but believe the engine is 16v with hydraulic valve lifters which would adjust accordingly.plus as i said earlier its how far to go, times money as we say up north. geoff.
The piston high difference would not need to be a lot to alter the comp. pressure,s. How accurate can you measure the piston high via the injector hole,s ? how was they measured ?
Yes it has hydraulic lifters but they are small as is there limits for adjustment. I have known the valve,s to be held open when cold and have a misfire.
thanks Kev may be an idea to do cylinder leakage test, another thought was would it be possible for timing chain to have (jumped) which i believe can happen with small chain driven VAG engines.bit of a learning curve developing.car now back with owner, but would still welcome further thoughts on the subject from anybody with this engine experiences. geoff signing off for late sunday (how sad)
i totlaly agree with kevin it wouldnt need much in the conrod bend to affect compression as engine warms up it builds enough compression to fire the only way to be sure is to remove head and measure piston height
A cylinder leakage test wouldn't show a bent rod once cylinder is pressurised it will only reveal percent of leakage. I did a Peugeot 1.9D a few years back driven thru a flood only one rod was bent the piston was around 4mm lower than the rest at TDC.
