Volkswagen Golf Plus 1.6 FSi BLF - Code P0196 Oil temp/level sensor implausible signal - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 03/2006
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1598cc BLF

This car has come in for a service, and also a 'quick' look at the reason why 'oil sensor garage' is appearing on the display when starting.

I have scanned with VCDS and the code was;

P0196 - Oil temp/level sensor implausible signal.

I looked at meas. blocks for oil level, and it was showing 0.00mm.

I happened to have a sensor on the shelf, so popped it in to no avail.
Have visually inspected condition of wires back to the last plug near battery, before it disappears into the main loom, and the wires all look very good, no abrasion etc.

I must add that the customer is very prohibitive of me spending time on this fault, as usual, so I am not necessarily asking for a fix/silver bullet, but more if anyone else has had the same experience/problem, purely for my own benefit, rather than the fix of this car.

If someone does know the reason behind my fault, I would rather be led to the answer, rather than being told outright.!

Sorry for the ramble, would appreciate any comments.

Hi Liam, make sure bonnet micro switch in latch is working.

The bonnet switch is working fine, when pulling bonnet release the hood open message appears on display, so no problem there unfortunately.

Check if the reverse lights are working?

If they are not check fuse 4 (5amp) on the Dash fuse panel.

Hi Liam,

If it is a 3 wire type I would check at sensor multiplug (connected) for earth, 5v feed, PWM signal usually in blocks of three, then check for same at relevant ECU pins, let us know how you get on...

As a quick "fix", I'm fairly confident this can be coded out by changing the dash coding to a fixed service intervals only coding - of course the car would then have to be on a fixed servicing regime.

Also check the wiring where it runs up the back of the engine near to where it feeds through a retaining clip on the block.

I have the car booked in on Tuesday, and will be having a more in depth look.

Have had another go at this one, reverse lights not working, blowing fuse no 14 in dash fascia panel.

So now looking at tracing a short, only problem is that vivid lists that many circuits for that one 5a fuse that it could be tricky.

AD useless for wiring diagrams.

Does anyone have any decent online sources for wiring?

Found it!

For some reason reverse light switch was short to ground.

Popped the plug off, no more blowing fuse and oil warning message not appearing.

Had a switch here too, so job now sorted.
