Vauxhall Astra Z16XEP 2006 - Cutting out - Fixed #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: z16xep

Hi all

would like some help
we have a astra 16 2006 z16xep
it cuts out after about 10 mins
we lose comms with engine ecu and abs light flashes
it will not restart and sometimes will not crank
the customer has changed ecu.cim,and fuse box.
using tec2 ,on ecus presant, we lose the engine control module.
after 15/20 mins it will restart
have checked all i can
any ideas?

Do you still have power and Earth at the engine ECU when it is a non start?

I had one in with similar problem but not an ABS light on.

This stored loads of fault codes all pointing to an engine ecu failure.

When i did an auto scan fault codes where stored in many ecu's relating to no comms with engine ecu.

Also when i did have a non start/no crank situation the fuel pump would often run and injectors operate pumping fuel into cylinders causing a hydraulic lock.

Eventually i decided to replace ecu and never had a problem since other than engine going bang in a big way.

I had similar symptoms on an Astra last year. ECU thermal fault which was successfully repaired by Actronics.

When you say "ECU Replaced by customer" how did he do this and where did he get it from?

I have found many times over the years that just because it is new (Especially if it was a customer E-bay purchace of dubious provenance) it doesnt mean it isnt still the problem!

the ecu was a new one fron dealer
it was programed in by dealer

Interesting.

Like I implied, the cutting out followed by No comms AND ABS ON were the symptoms in my case.

I wonder if Actronics (Or whoever) might be able to test run the ecu off the vehicle to se if they can fault it?

(Why am I reminded of 2001?

)

I know what your saying.
one thing i forgot to say is we now have the old ecu ,the fault is exactly the same on it.??

UPDATE
have just re set and programed ecu to another car
all works ok on this one
???

the fault has now developed
after the initial 15\20 min running ,it stalls and will not re start all day

Fault found to be in non gen coil pack.
still scratching my head.
a brand new coil pack can cause so many faults!!!

How odd. The funny thing is how did this stop the comms??

I suppose it was scrambling the software somehow.

What make was the Non-oem coilpack as a matter of interest...

How did you find out is was the coilpack, an inspired guess or was there some test that pointed towards it?

hi paul
i was looking on TIS ,it mentioned mis fires due to poor quality plugs,we replaced the denso plugs for bosch and it improved a bit,the coil pack was new and the car had been to the dealers,[so no need to suspect it].we noticed a small fuel parts sticker so decided to fit a o\e coil pack ....fixed
still dont understand how it can shut the whole car down.
I dont think even a scope test on the CAN line would have shown anything.Would like to get it back in one day to check.

Worrying how the name 'Fuel Parts' comes up again. Only this week I had several wasted hours diagnosing a Vectra cam sensor fault rewiring the sensor harness checking the loom, replacing the cam belt etc etc only to find it was the new Fuel Parts sensor which was duff. I am going to take the matter up with the supplier to try and get some compensation, after all I cant bill the customer for it can I? Their stuff used to be pretty reasonable.

Were finding dealer parts cheaper than factor,not all the time but it worth ringing around.
