Vehicle came in on saturday customer concerned about what i would describe as a light rattle almost like a diesel noise coming from engine once warmed up slightly. noise is only there on tickover and disappears completely as soon as accelerator is depressed. It doesnt go gradually or come back gradually its just there on tickover so don't suspect tappets. Oil pressure is good.

Car is due a cambelt anyway so I am going to strip most dephaser pulley faults seem to cause rough running and a rattle on start up but this isnt is there anyway of testing?
Or am I better off just stripping and seeing what I find?
I prefer to change dephasers when doing a belt as it generally is just a matter of time!

The noise and symptoms you have do point to a noisy camshaft dephaser.

Common problem with them, dealer charge is about a grand.

I'd agree with you all, i've done 2 of these on the 2.0 models & the symptoms on both were as you described. A word of warning though- auto data used to say to set them in the middle when setting the timing- don't, turn them backwards & fowards untill they lock in the set position. (they also used to call the oil control solonoid a camshaft sensor). I haven't checked if they've corrected this yet. I also mark the ring gear once you put the setting bar on the cams to give a reference point as its hard to find the correct point the crank pin sits in. (no keyways in cams or crank) Alan.

Our dealer recommends replacing the solenoid as well hen chaniging the dephaser soemthing to do with oil starvation causing the dephaser to fail. They tell us Renault themselves told them to do it
