Peugeot 407 HDi 2007 - Noise at tick over, clutch down and noise goes #

Hi

Noise at tick over which at first sounds like an engine cover rattle. Put clutch down and noise away. Feel noise through clutch pedal when pressed lightly. Front crank pulley in good condition and this does not have a dual mass. Noticed excess end float on crankshaft. Does anyone know of any problems with this engine similar to this. It has only done 37000 miles and well serviced. I will be stripping down next week

Hi Les,have you checked gear oil level?or noise could be comming from gears in gearbox?

This sounds to me like DMF problem.
I would think that a 407 HDI would have a duel mass flywheel. ???
or a clutch problem.

Thanks for replies. Oil level checked.Was told by our supplier that dual mass not fitted. Will try and check with dealer.Not tackled job yet. One man down due to holiday. Spoke to customer yesterday and he wants us to get cracking. There is excess end float on crank. Putting clutch down pushes crank forward and noise goes away.(one theory) There are four diff size of thrust washers so there is scope there.I will have to get it back in and try and pinpoint before getting stuck in.

Just arrived at work and on the fax I received about thrust washer sizes from dealer is a picture of crank and dual mass flywheel. Was told by my parts supplier that this was fitted without one.This puts a different light on things. my first impression was flywheel and that is why I checked with supplier.
