Audi A6 2002 - Non start due to immobiliser fault - Fixed #

Hi all
Audi A6 2002 with immo3, cluster VDO C5. Non start due to immo problem. Reader coil is in the ign so not handy to change. I have checked the wiring from the reader to the cluster.
I am trying to decide if I need a key or a reader coil.
Customer had two keys but only one worked, however they kept both keys on the same key ring and the car wouldn’t start unless both keys were present. So, only one key worked but I have no idea which one. When I checked there was only one key coded. I have the pin code, tested as being correct, but the keys I have will not code. Coding procedure fails at the end. The light flashes instead of being on solid.
Block data from both keys -

Hi Alan,
From your block data I would suggest Key 1 is OK but not coded to car and Key 2 is faulty.

Hi Mike.
I thought the same. I even confidently announced to the customer that I would have him running in a few minutes.
Its showing zero keys programmed because I jumped into coding the key without checking the procedure and my memory failed me somewhat. I erased the one key that was coded, because that’s how I remembered the procedure. It did originally show one key programmed. I don’t think that should cause a problem as the procedure wipes all keys anyway?
What I can’t figure out is why the coding fails. Its not a tool issue. Vag Com is very reliable and I tried 3 versions of software with 2 interfaces as well as another scanner.
Its difficult to know what way to test this. I will try and see if I can pick up an inductive signal from the reader later but I won’t know if its good or not as I have never scoped one before. If I can find a spare reader coil I will wire it direct to the cluster and look for another key to try and code.
More later.

Key signal too low try and clean cluster plugs with contact cleaner and blow out with air, this is a common fault but can result in cluster replacement, i have tried before to replace reader and lock and wires to cluster plug but usually will return intermittently
Key programming error because could not read key and complete programming hope this helps Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply. I had already eliminated the wiring at the back of the cluster. I got a correctly encoded transponder and that didn’t improve matters, so its not a key problem in this case.
Since I posted last I took the engine ecu out with the intention of cheating somewhat (removing the immo) and discovered corrosion on the injector pins. Water damage only on the pins externally, none inside. Since plugging it back in I got a fault code for an injector driver, now repaired by cleaning the pins. There was no such code when I got the car but I know someone else looked at it before me. The eeprom in the ecu that holds the immo data is faulty. I can sort that easily enough but I am not sure that would cause the key coding to fail. Maybe the ecu needs to answer the immo to complete the process. Maybe the driver problem spiked the ecu, or the cluster, or both.
In general I find immo live data a bit ambiguous so I wanted this to be a learning experience. I am kinda surprised there are not more opinions on live data from an old system like this. Either way, the customer needs his car so when the ne eeprom arrives next week it will go out minus its immo function.
cheers
Alan

Because the eeprom in the ecu was faulty I couldn’t read the data from it so I replaced the eeprom with data from an identical ecu. It should have been possible to code this to the car, same as coding a used ecu, but the coding failed. It would have been interesting to look into this further but time was against me so I re wrote the new eeprom with a free running file and let the car out without an immo.
