Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 X10XEP 2004 - Flashing "F" and non start, multiple codes #

Year of Manufacture *: 04
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.0 X10XEP (?) with semi-auto box

Non start/non crank with flashing "F" on dash.(though aparrantly it did fire up briefly last night) Faultcodes as follows using Launch...

Engine management.

ECU identification data seems good!

P0136 (O2 sensor-intermittant)

P1615 (Incorect vehicle ID from BCM)

P1616 (Incorrect vehicle ID from instrument cluser)

Transmission ECU

ECU identification data seems scrambled. VIN numbers etc all seem replaced with "***?**"

However codes follow..

P1722-008 (selector lever agreement-Not present)

P1723-008 (Selector lever redundent data agreement-not present)

U2107-C (CAN No coms with IPC (istruments) or BCM-Not present)

P1607-000 (Controller replace-Present)

P0725-004 (Engine speed sensor CAN bus Malf-Present)

P1895-004 (Engine torque sensor CAN bus Malf-present)

U2100-c (CAN bus Malf-not present)

U2108-C (CAN bus no coms with ABS, Reprogram/replace controller-present)

U2105-C (CAN no coms ECU- present)

A scan of instrument cluster, Immobiliser and ABS revealed no stored faults.

Autodata does not appear to have any additional info on the transmission fault codes and although a google search suggests that although the "Flashing F" problem is not uncommon, none of the examples I have found seem to correspond with this list of fault codes.

In addition, the hydralic fluid resevoir on the top of the gearbox contains a nasty dark brown fluid with small bits floating in it! Whether this is related to this particular problem or not (Or is just another nasty for the future) I cannot really say.

Now the question is...

Is this likly to be a scrambled ECU requiring dealer level reprogramming/replacement. Mechanical issues within the gearbox, or a loose wire somewhere??

Or a combination thereof...

Any thoughts gratefully received..

did one a while ago, similar faults, required new transmission ecu, you will need tech 2 to configure a new unit.

I would be interested to know exactly what combination of "Corsa" "Easytronic" "Flashing F" "Non-start" (and so on) it is nececary to use to get anything other than "No record found" in an archive search??

Well, unless anybody has a better offer! I guess its off to Vauxhalls with it

Oh well, Much as I expected....

(No access to Tech 2)

On a more general note. What actually goes wrong with them???

(I sometimes say to customers with these sort of problems.. "Ahh! I know whats wrong here.. It has electronics in it! If you wish to avoid this sort of problem in the future it would be best to try to buy a car that doesnt have any!"

I could do a search, but i read every post here (and other forum,s and they are pretty much imprinted on my brain) it,s amazing how much you learn.
I would try a new crank sensor for the cost (less than £30), wires have been known to break corrode only a few inches (i,m old) from the BCM.

Unfortunatly the owner is in a hurry (For various perfectly reasonable reasons, I am not in any way grumbling. This has come at a really bad time for him) so it is either a "Quick" repair he is looking for or a replacement vehicle! Sending ECU's off for speculative testing and repair would likly exceed the time threshold

I am tempted to try the crank sensor (Mentioned during various Google searches for this problem) but for the fact that...

a) Crank sensor is not listed as an ECU fault, where people have solved the "F-ing" problem by CPS replacement it generally seems to have been so.

b) I am bothered by the aparrantly corrupted transmission ECU identification data. Although I can see how a faulty CPS might cause a non-start (Though why a non-crank??? Although I understand it can on this model!) I can not see why it would scramble the ECU data (Or interfere with the scan tools ability to read it)

Little point in asking, if you don,t trust the answers.
I can tell you for fact (Had it lots of time,s) a failed crank sensor will stop one of these "auto,s" from cranking.

I am not disputing the awnsers, I have seen them elsewhere on the net (Along with brake bulb failure

) and may well try it if the customer agrees to pay me regardless of result (Very important that...

) I am just curious as to why a crank sensor failure would have this effect.

And aparrantly scramble the transmission ECU coding, especially if it becomes unscrambled as a result of replacing the CPS.

and also how an ECU can identify a faulty CPS without the engine moving in a way that will allow it to lock the engine to prevent cranking but not actually generate a fault code for a faulty CPS.

I just like to know how these things work. thats all..

Crank sensor fault on these (1.0,1.2, 1.4 ) is so common i keep one in stock and have a known good one for test (10 mins work max). So its a no brainer test for me.

Update, sort of...

I am coming round to the idea that this is some sort of can bus comms problem.

One of the downsides of being a Mobile is that this sort of problem is difficult to "manage". In a workshop you would have the thing parked to one side and might try something every hour or so as ideas (Or suggestions

) occur, I can only see it once a day (If that).

My next Plan is to try to probe various connectors and see if there is CAN continuity IYSWIM and see where that takes me. As an aside, the battery has run down. This happened a week before the problems arose, wether this is a "Symptom" or just a dead battery I do not know as yet (On charge overnight but my feeling is that this might be a symptom since the battery was severly discharged (OCV 4.5) and yet it accepted charge, erm, vigourously (the 12 Amp limit on my bench charger)!)

Although the transmission ECU ID data seems scrambled, live data does suggest that not only can I actually communicate with the trannie ECU but that also I can see data that the trannie ECU can see directly (And I can see interesting stuff, such as whether or not the drivers door is open and when I have the ignition key in "Crank" position or not...). But it cannot see stuff that should be sent from the engine ECU. IYSWIM

I have had no previous experiance of CAN BUS problems so am hunting in the dark somewhat. (And the added difficulty in that I hate "wiring" problems owing to being colour blind!

)

If ther are any Silver Bulllets going on Corsa CAN faults I would love to know...
