Land Rover 90 TD5 2005 - DMF, clutch replacement advice required #

Hi all,
I have the above coming in for clutch replacement (slipping) next week and wanted advice as to if I should replace the DMF or not. I will of course replace it if it has any excessive play but I am unsure of the reliability if all seems well. I have advised the customer that I think it should be replaced but as usual the cost is an issue, and there is always the possibility that he may have conflicting advice. It is used on a farm and regularly used for towing. The vehicle has done about 80k.

if you dont change the DMF at that mileage and history ,if the dmf fails in a short while will the customer quite happily pay to do the job again !!!
probably not and you will be the bad guy
we have been there trying to save the customers money

Thanks for your response Mark.
I had already told the customer that I felt it should be changed but because of the cost I think it is natural for anybody to question that. He is a long standing regular customer and I have no doubt that if he chooses not to replace it, he will willingly pay again if it is required at a later date. What made me question this was a local factors telling me that most garages only buy the clutch????? Up to this point I was in no doubt but I think I just needed reassurance

we used to do a lot of hire cars and driving schools
we found that the vast majority were quite worn at highish mileages and we insisted on replacing dmf's
the same company also used a national chain who did not fit dmf's a lot of the time
we had zero returns for justified clutch faults
the national chain had a very high return rate
i do believe that bye changing the dmf you would be saving your customer money in the long term

Think this is a classic instance where it needs to be noted on the invoice that the customer was advised to change the DMF but chose not to.

I've had a few instances this year when trying to save a customer money has come back and nearly bitten me on the arse, I'm not doing it any more, I just quote them a price now and they can take it or leave it.

Hi Bryan

I fully agree with the others, at that mileage most DMF's will fail the test or will be so close to failing that you cannot say they will last the life off the clutch being fitted.

Prices have come down dramatically over the last year & I now quote a very competitive price to replace both. Taking a smaller profit I feel is better than working later for nothing.

The problem occurs when you have done it & a month later it comes back in with a slight judder, which 'could be the clutch'.

The DMF will not last until next clutch change.
We do lots of these, & chnage probably 90% of the flywheels as suggested is the best option to the customer before starting the job.

Also important to change the spigot bush & soak in oil for at least a day before fitting, to prevent that horrible noise upon taking up drive.

Hi Steve

I agree always replace the spigot bush, as we fit one we put another in the oil pot!! Never use grease.
