On the early puntos i had problems like this a couple of times and was down to the wiring from the relays on the bulkhead usually the wiring harness rubbed against the corner of the air filter casing and have seen wires rubbed through completely this may not be your problem but id definitely check the wiring all around this area maybe disturbed poor wiring when engines been hooked up to support beam the code light is only on because the ecu isn't being powered up properly
