thanks everybody for the replies,
I finally got to look at this one again today & after ordering a relay with a built in resistor & trying it , it didn't work.So i connected the earth for the relay to the other side of the bulb so that the relay only got a decent earth when the lights were switched to main beam.The main beam is the filament that comes on when the engine is running with the sidelights on.
