I did a Mitsubishi 4x4 vehicle a few months ago and had exactly the same problem as yourself. The spots couldn't be got to extinguish with the sidelights only on. I wired the spots as Andy has described but I run one of the wires through the coil windings of another relay (for it to act as a resistor). In other words I wired the positive feed at the headlamp to ter. 85, using the windings as a resistor I then run a wire from terminal 86 to terminal 85/86 of the spot light relay. This reduced the voltage and was enough to stop the spots coming on with the sidelights.
