Hi stuart it does sound like the pump timing i have done a lot of engines 1.8 endura dont want to teach granny to suck eggs but did you use a pinning kit when you checked the pump timing it only has to be a fraction out and they keep stalling and the idle will surge like the symptons your having
i done one for a garage the other day they tryed to take a short cut by not pinning the crankshaft just painted reference marksHTH
