As Chris says the rear box can hold a hell of a lot of water.
As to the poor idle, just a thought were the lifters properly discharged of oil before reassembly ? we`ve done several of these but had one recently where the lifters had pumped up and once they do you cannot release them, had to whip them out empty them and refit, car ran like a sewing machine after, hope this helps.
