Hi Mark. We had one (that A major after market parts supplier with workshops) had condemned, and quoted my accountant a ridiculous price to fit an alternator or a magic electronic box, So he rang me to see if it was a fair price for the job, I told him it sounded like they they didn't know what was wrong and were quoting silly prices to lose the job, I told him to call their bluff and tell them to get on with it as long as they would guarantee that it would cure the problem, which they wouldn't, so he brought the car 20 miles to us. We checked the small wires in the back of the alternator and found that it should have had a warning light wire and a positive feed for sensing, which it had lost. we checked where the engine harness plugs into the body harness and that connection had corroded away, we repaired it and it cured the problem, p.s if the voltage is low the alternator will think that the battery is flat and keep putting more power into the battery.
so check the voltage on pos, w/l. and ign or sens wires, they should all be around 14v with the engine running.
