Hi andrew, I will give you the perspective from the emergency services, I have been in the Fire Service since 1984, I have seen literally hundreds of car fires, plastic tanks and all the rest of it, I have never ever seen a petrol tank explode in all those years, contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe.! Whenever we get mobilised to a car fire our fire control are trained to ascertain the type of fuel that the car on fire is believed to contain, petrol, diesel or LPG, the first two don't cause us any problems, LPG brings in a whole different set of parameters. With LPG we adopt a "defensive" position, ie a long way off, if we know that that vehicle is on LPG. What I don't think you get here is that there are so few external indicators that a vehicle is on LPG, maybe a secondary fuel flap close to the primary ala Vauxhall, or a sticker that is burnt off prior to our arrival, I am well aware of exactly how an LPG powered car is supposed to behave when involved in fire, I lecture on it to my crews, and I have to make a snap decision on arrival at these incidents as I am in charge of the crews safety, which is my primary concern, therefore, I stand by my original post, taking into account all those that are involved in this industry, I cannot reccomend it, it has the potential to kill people, firefighters, I can't live with that.
