    Hi Malcolm

    To answer your question.....

    >>>>do we have a definitive definition of exactly what a squib is ?<<<<

Yes we do, A squib is a small explosive device.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squib_(explosive)

So in your check of the archives and internet..
    >>>>it is part of the firing mechanism in the air bag itself.<<<<

This would be the correct answer when refering to airbag systems.

Many people call the clockspring the squib out of ignorance and some think the actual airbag itself is the squib.

    >>>>A Scenic we had on the same day registered a lateral sensor squib fault,<<<<

I suspect this is a misleading code description from an aftermarket scantool.

And remember the words of the great Tony Sefton...

    >>>>The Squib Circuit is the Firing circuit, But that is the Whole circuit. The Diagnostic Machine cannot differentiate between the clockspring being open circuit or the airbag itself being open circuit.

So now its pointed you in the right direction, you have to do the rest of the diagnostic procedure manually.<<<<
