Air bag light on, code read as drivers air bag squib open or short circuit.

My question is do we have a definitive definition of exactly what a squib is ?

I have checked archives and internet and come up with differing ideas, some say it is the clock spring contact behind the wheel and others say it is part of the firing mechanism in the air bag itself.

A Scenic we had on the same day registered a lateral sensor squib fault, as far as I can ascertain this should be in the B pillar and certainly wont have a clock spring !

Any help will be appreciated as I don't want to go changing the wrong thing.
